ID4 doesn't need a sequel, but if they made one with Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum I'd watch it.

"In development" means squat. Vin Diesel has had his Hannibal project "in development" on IMDB for about a decade.

Didn't Chris Carter say he hated ID4? (Hence that scene in The X-Files). Did he say why?
I agree with this, but I would enjoy a sequel for the nostalgia alone.

Because he thought it was stupid? I don't know. Don't get me wrong, I saw it six times in the theater(Of course, I saw everything six times in the theater when I was a teenager, lol), and I love the movie, but it is pretty corny. I don't know why anyone would hate it, though. It's obviously meant to be an over-the-top throwback to 1950's flying saucer movies. So it accomplishes what it set out to do.
It's kind of like the way people always diss the 1960's Batman series, as if the people who made the show were taking it seriously. It was supposed to be campy and fun and ridiculous. People just don't get that.
He had two movies released in 2008, produced Karate Kid, is in pre-production on MIB3, and is attached to more "in development" projects on IMDB than pretty much anyone else in existence. So I guess the answer to your question is.... did one year without a Will Smith movie mess you up that bad?
Plus he's already got more money than god and would probably like to spend time with the wife and kids.
I could never make it through an episode of X-Files, I thought it was just about the most boring show on the air at the time. I am however happy it exists for those who do enjoy it.

He was doing well in Hollywood but then he got in one little fight and his mom got scared, so he had to go and stay with his Uncle and Aunt in Bel Air. Which naturally has delayed some projects.
I recall reading where he was taking time off to be with his family and to focus on his production company (he produced his son's Karate Kid remake).
He has a few projects in development for 2011.
I always thought that Stargate and ID4 would have perfectly fit together, especially in a sequel.
They've been talking about this ever since the first one came out. I smell a Duke Nukem Forever in the air here...

one interesting way would be they find a mostly whole database in the pieces of one of the ships.
they find the path the aliens had taken and the path they planned after earth along with scouting reports.
the humans use this along with some surviving ships to contact the next race or two on the list.
so if the aliens do come back they might have a bit of suprise on their hands.

^ The aliens from ID4 can't come back. That was their entire civilization on that ship. When it went, so did they.
