In praise of TV's assholes

The Borgified Corpse

Admiral
Admiral
One trend I've been noticing lately is that on a lot of the shows I watch, my favorite character is often the most aggressively disagreeable one, the one that none of the other characters on the show can stand. These flies in the ointment provide the vital interpersonal conflict that keeps most of these shows going.

Of course, the king of all TV-Assholia is Eric Cartman on South Park. On a show that is an allegory for the folly of American culture, Cartman is the raging id. He's selfish. He's driven only by his own vices & appetites. He had Scott Tenorman's parents killed over a matter of $16.12. He told Butters that the entire world had been annihilated in a nuclear war just so that he could go to Casa Bonita for Kyle's birthday party. He dresses up like Hitler. He spews out profanity-laden rants against Jews, hippies, etc. He's just... evil.

2nd place would go to Arnold Judas Rimmer on Red Dwarf. "He was the most unpopular man on the ship. He even had to arrange his own surprise birthday parties." "There's a saying amongst the officers. 'If a job's worth doing, it's worth doing well. If it's not worth doing, give it to Rimmer.'" "Astoundingly zealous. Possibly mad. Probably has more teeth than brain cells."

Most of the rest tend to fall under the arrogant scientist breed of asshole. They're geniuses who think that their intelligence gives them the right to treat other people like dirt.

Few humans in the whole of science fiction have more blood on their hands than Gaius Baltar on the new Battlestar Galactica. He sold out 50 billion people in exchange for some Cylon poon tang. And as the show goes on, he's still only truly concerned with number one. But then, since no one else loves him, he's just making up for that deficiency on his own, I guess. Oddly, the longer the show goes on, the less I care about the rest of humanity. The only thing that kept me watching past the 1st few episodes of Season 3 was the desire to see what becomes of Gaius Baltar.

Rodney McKay on Stargate Atlantis doesn't have the kind of heavy conscience that Baltar does but McKay is much, much ruder. Owen Harper on Torchwood is very much cut from the same cloth.

Dr. Kurt Mendell on Odyssey 5 isn't nearly as much of an asshole as the rest mentioned here. He's kind of a pig but he means well. Still, he's got an edge to him that makes him the most interesting character on the show.

So who else loves the asshole of TV?

Josh Lyman, snarkiest guy on The West Wing. The back and forth between him and Donna was a great aspect of the show.

-nobody

Gene Hunt from "Life on Mars."
Al Swearengen from "Deadwood."
Mr. Burns (of course!) from "The Simpsons."
Frank Burns from "MASH"
Adam Klaus from "Jonathan Creek."
Jim Profit from "Profit"
Fitz from "Cracker Mysteries," the UK version, not the crap US version--pretty much the shittiest hero EVER.
The Devil(pretty much the ULTIMATE asshole, you know) from "Reaper."

Baltar & McKay are too wussy to be good hardcore assholes. To me, to qualify as an asshole, you need to be doing it on purpose, pro-actively, not just because you're frightened of everything around you and reacting defensively. That's more the category of wimp than asshole. Bonus points of assholery just seems to be an innate part of the person's character.

The best ones I can think of, where some magical intersection of acting and writing allows odious characters to come off well that ordinarily would make you put your foot thru the TV screen, are:

Chloe O'Brian, 24 - She gets a free pass for being the only character besides Jack who is consistently competent & incorruptable.

Kara "Starbuck" Thrace, BSG - For the first three seasons, the sheer fun factor of Kara let her off the hook for her personality issues. She's been pushing it in S4, tho...

Brother Cavil, BSG - Being an asshole is kinda his job, so...

Joan Holloway, Mad Men - So good at the Queen Bitch Bee routine, you have to forgive her for being completely intolerable.

Pete Campbell, Mad Men - What a sickening, creepy little freak. I love him! But I'm not sure if he's an "asshole" or something significantly worse. That weird little story of his about deer slaying and cabins in the woods screams SERIAL KILLER in the making. Although that might be a benefit to someone who works in advertising.

Ben Linus, Lost - Hey, he's one of the good guys, so he's not really an asshole. Right?

Jack Shepherd, Lost - A completely different sort of asshole from Ben. More of just an idiot. But he tries.

Al Swearengen, Deadwood - For whom "asshole" is a comparatively tame statement.

Bill Henrickson, Nicolette Grant, Roman Grant, Alby Grant, Alby's wife, Lois Henrickson, Adaleen Grant, Frank Harlow, Rhonda Volmer - Whoah, lots of assholery (wide variety in type and degree) going on in Utah. And I'm not even counting the Green "brothers" - that's well into psycho territory.

And speaking of psychos, I don't count really out-there people like Keamy from Lost, Sylar from Heroes or Satan from Reaper, who are beyond asshole category by being nuts and/or the ultimate avatar of evil.

I wonder why nobody mentioned Sebastian Shark, yet.

/yes, loove that show.
//i know, i know, not fark
///still, slashies!

Oh, man. I remember that.

"Yes! Yesss! Oh, let me taste your tears, Scott! Mm, your tears are so yummy and sweet! Oh, the tears of unfathomable sadness!"

Q from Star Trek: TNG is my favorite TV's asshole. God-like powers mixed with the behavior of a 10 year old makes for a great asshole.

While Mr. Burns is one of many examples of assholes on The Simpsons, the chief of them must be Homer himself, one of the most consistently entertaining assholes around (sure, when pushed he tries to do the right thing, but he mostly acts out of supreme selfishness).

>Frank Burns from M*A*S*H

I think Burns' replacement, Charles Emerson Winchester, better embodies the qualities of a classic asshole. Burns was a little bit too weasely and wimpy to be a true bona fide asshole. Maybe Robert Duvall's version of Frank Burns.
