In one of the deleted scenes from STID, there is a TOS ship!

Thanks. With the commentary, most of the deleted scenes, and the (2D) IMAX version on the disc, it looks pretty satisfying to me. I certainly couldn't care one bit about the 3D post-conversion being on the disc. The other features are minor points to me. YMMV (although it's a shame two of the deleted scenes didn't make it).

I'm guessing that Compendium is only another tide-over release. After the next movie, we'll get another split-extra release, followed maybe a year later with an 'ultimate' collection of all three films and close to if not all the extras.

When was it suggested onscreen that the Kelvin was an old ship at the time of its encounter with the Narada? I don't deny that there may have been something, I just honestly don't remember any reference to its age.

Actually, if you watch the documentaries on the ST bluray, it goes into detail about the Kelvin's age. They even show things like weathered deck stairs or something, implying the ship was already pretty old by the time of Nero's incursion.

I was figuring on an age of 40-50 years for the Kelvin when I first saw the movie, based on the registry and the architecture alone.

I am happy they cut it out. I think the writers went overboard with into darkness with all the in your face homages. the rehash of spock's death and this deleted scene of a way too obvious tos ship are good examples.

Keep things subtle next time, do not throw it in your audience face. make them look for it. the trill is better when we see a hormage or an easter egg that is nearly hidden and not when it is staring at us right in the face.

I've never really thought about the Kelvin's age. I do recall now, though, that issue #14 of IDW's ongoing Star Trek comic series shows the Kelvin crew making first contact with the Roylans (Keenser's species) in 2230.
