The production would've been better off simply making improvements of the Gorn costume. Look at what the Japanese has done in making improvements on Godzilla.
It is hard to buy, but given an infinite multiverse every possible atomic configuration exists, perhaps because they are so similar in configuration is why the Prime and Mirror universes cross over so easily
