Impact of Discovery on post ST4 new Trek movies

Assuming there is a successful fourth movie after Beyond and that the new TV show is a success, at what point does the new movie franchise converge with the new TV show? Granted, I know this is a lot to assume, and I'm hoping mostly that the movies and TV shows are independently successful, but at what point does the tension between the alternate universe and the "Prime" universe become something that is explicitly addressed?

Discovery will dodge the bullet mostly because it's set pre-TOS and won't step on anyone's toes too much, but Prime universe prequels set in Garrett-era Trek would face a host of difficulties, not least of which are the red uniforms and overall aesthetic. Sure, you can make updates and changes, but at some level certain parts of Trek are more fixed than others.

I understand the animosity to new Trek, but perhaps there should be some kind of narrative convergence after the next movie, a way to integrate the new movie timeline into future Trek TV without destroying everything that has come before and leaving the door open for a new potential future that takes the best of both.

I'd be surprised if they converged DSC and the Kelvin Timeline in any way. I think the whole point of the alternate universe conceit in the KT is precisely not to step on the tv shows' collective toes and let them be separate entities. If DSC does well, it could get its own Prime movies, maybe. But I'd be perfectly content to see Kelvin on the big screen and DSC on the small screen. The only way I think they might tie the two universes together at all (and this could be cool, imho) is if they do like a Mirror, Mirror deal -- just a one-off episode where the Discovery winds up in the Kelvin Timeline and need to get back.

Bad Robot/Paramount and CBS are on two totally different pages. I would almost call them competitors.

Both are money makers that Paramount has declared a profit on or successful enough to produce a sequel, so both will continue their respective universes as long as they continue to show that level of interest.

And they'll look into oppertunities to reference each other as audience interest and legal issues are assessed.

The tension between the different universes does not need to be addressed, just like the tension between the DCEU movies, the Dark Knight Trilogy, the Arrowverse and Gotham does not need to ever be addressed.

If other fictional properties can have totally unrelated continuities, then Trek should be able to handle them just fine.

Not sure what the question means. Aside from the need to explain Worf's presence off of DS9, the TNG movies never impacted the DS9, Voyager or Enterprise (aside from a few casual mentions). Nor did the TOS movies post ST4 (coincidentally) impact TNG.

They inhabit different timelines, no need for them to narratively impact each other. If you mean economically or some other fashion, I still am not sure what affect they'd have, since they are from different companies.

That said, I do not see them as competitors. The phrase "a rising tide lifts all ships" comes to mind, and it's in both of their best interests to see that the movies and show are a success.

Amen. Heck, we've currently got at least two unconnected GODZILLA movie series going on now, one in Japan and the new American version.

I doubt they'd ever converge. They really have no incentive to converge them. I suppose it's possible to have a crossover episode on DIS, but you'd have to be limited to the lesser, more affordable characters. I think the odds are very low.
