IMAXing????

TREK XI will be debuting on the IMAX screen in my local theatre. Getting a ticket for THE DARK KNIGHT was very difficult. But several of the scenes in that movie were filmed with IMAX in mind..does anyone know if that was the case for XI...and if not, would IMAX even matter???

Rob

Just judging from trailers, pics and TV spots, I think the scenic shots (Delta Vega, etc.) and space sequences were shot with IMAX in mind.

I always think of how great the Rura Penthe escape sequence would have looked in IMAX, and it looks like I'll get my chance with this movie!

And despite of this, Imax is still an improvement because of the larger screen, and far superior sound.

No, not a single second of it was filmed with an IMAX camera. It's entirely IMAX DMR.
I remember reading an article several months ago which mentioned that they shot a few scenes using not the standard IMAX rig but what were described as "experimental techniques" or some similar language. Anyone else remember this and have an idea what those were?

What does that mean? Does that mean I paid extra for my ticket to hear better sound??? :scream:

Pretty much, yeah. Another little bit of consolation could be, the seats are said to be more comfortable than standard theater seating. However, I disagree with that claim.

I don't recall that, neither did a search net any positive result.

DMR was, at one time, experimental. Do you think there is there any chance what you heard had to do with the IMAX DMR process?

Not knowing a great deal about IMAX or its history, I had an idea that could have been what they meant, but a quick check shows me that IMAX DMR has been around for more than ten years, so I'd suspect that's not it. I'll try to do a little more digging and see if I can turn up the article in question.

Edit:

I haven't found it yet, but I did find an article which gives a decent explanation of what was done:

There doesn't seem to be any problem of it looking crappy on the larger screen, at least.

The opening shot raped my mind on a tiny cinema screen.

On IMAX it will probably have charges filed against it.

Yep, they just announced Star Trek - The IMAX Experience at the Smithsonian Udvar-Hazy Airbus IMAX Theater premiering May 7th for a limited two-week engagement. Me and my buddies are SO there for the 9:45 PM show... I already bought my tickets!

the other imax thread

one of the posts had this..
In recent years (last three or so) IMAX has developed some processing tools that make non-IMAX footage look a lot better (provided it was on film stock--HD camera footage also benefit, but not as much). It's why the Dark Knight non-IMAX footage looked better than Spider-Man 2. The same processing should be in play for the Trek film.

That's better but it's still not true, screen filling IMAX which is what people are paying full price for.

It'd be fairer if they didn't promote such as an IMAX experience, ('cause it's not) and adjust the price down a few bucks.

You'd rather the film look warped? Because in order to fill the IMAX screen they'd have to force it into an aspect ratio it wasn't meant to fit.

You're paying for a clear and still very large picture, amazing sound, better seats and the ability to drink booze while watching a movie.

I just picked up the tickets for next Friday for Star trek 2D, as it says in the ticket.....well it might be a bit more expensive but this is about TOS, so i thought what the hell, lets do it in style.

Man am looking forward to it.....my first time in a Imax cinema and its Star Trek....woohooo.

I feel like i have found a willy wonka gold ticket.....

I'm seeing it in normal format on May 7, then going in the afternoon on May 8 to see it in IMAX. I shouldn't do that, since seeing it in IMAX may ruin my experiences seeing it in normal format after that!

I'm doing it the same way, but the way I'm looking at it is that first I enjoy the "standard" experience then the next day I'll see it in the ZOMG! way and enjoy both on their own merits. :)

I've been thinking of going to see it Imax, and these comments have convinced me. Particularly because the theater that I'm going to is at a furniture store. Wtf?
