Imagine if they used Soverign Class instead of Intrepid Class.

I think this would have been a brilliant move. Seeing as how often Voyager was depicted as a very advanced ship in the delta quadrent, i wish it was a soverign to make it more belivable. The other added advantages are that boring species like the Kazon would not dare to attack and we wouldnt have had to sit through horrible plots involving them.

anyway do you think it would of been cool if voyager was a soverign and not a little intrepid?

Janeway called Voyager "Smart and quick" when Tom asked her if she had a good ship to go capture the Indian with... Voyager was written as alpowerful all the time, and maybe if they had a Sovereign Class Starship all that imperial nigh Colonial writing would have held water, but it would have changed nothing since Voyager was as strong or as week as it needed to be to create tension and drama for each story.

No. They'd have to totally rewrite the pilot (why send your most advanced ship of the line on pirate hunting duty?) and the smaller size and better (presumed) speed of an Intrepid better fits the theme of the show anyway as a group of people trying to get home quickly through hostile space. My impression is also that the Sovereign-class, aside from being bigger and better armed, may also be less ideal for scientific and exploratory endeavors than the Intrepids, which was an important element of VOY.

Besides all that, Intrepids are far and away the prettier ship, so why would they replace it with something less visually appealing?

Like i say the cheap over-powering of the intrepid really grated me, most of the time Voyager should have been running away rather than fighting. Also I dont think the intrepid is that much slower than voyager. I just think it'd have been cool is all, seeing a Soverign blast those pesky Kazon and Viddians out of the skies

I don't think it'd be any different. The plots would still be the same in the end because it'd be the hero ship.

I think Voyager works fine as it is. The Sovereign is one of those super badass good-at-everything ships. It's a badass warship, a capable science ship, a capable escort, etc. It works better for Voyager to be something smaller and more specialized. Although I do think the moving nacelles are stupid and wish they'd just stay in one position all the time.

And I believe that's the way it was intended. The sovereign is only for movies ... that's why it never showed up on DS9's battle scenes.

Maybe Paramount made a contract with John Eaves in which it's specified that his design work was for movies only - making it cheaper.

I mean, if I were a starship designer and Paramount asked me to create something, it would be more expensive if they wanted to use my starship design all the time.
