I'm seeing Star Trek 2 on the big screen

Enjoy! It's a great film, but seeing it on DVD is just not the same as the big screen. Have fun.

Have fun. I had the opportunity to see it on the big screen myself last spring.

It's quite a treat.

That nebula scene must kick ass on a big screen with suround sound.

In 1982 I don't think they were using surround sound in theaters, or maybe they were using Dolby Surround. Does anybody know? I would expect this film to be in stereo only, and that's how I remember it when I saw it back then. However, my memory has taken quite a nosedive after 25 years.

It would depend on the theatre, and depend on the film. I'm pretty sure Apocalypse Now was mixed for surround sound when it was released in 1979. Now, keep in mind, I wasn't born until 1987, so this is all based on reading books and such. I don't have any first hand memories one way or the other.

And, to the OP, I am completely envious. TWOK in 35 mm? Enjoy it. I only hope I get to see the film projected sometime in the future.

Threads like these make me feel so old. How many of you out there are too young to have seen TWOK in the theatre in its initial release?

I saw it first on a battered VHS tape, but I voted for DVD, since that's about the closest thing on your poll.

^ Yes, that's what came to my mind, too. But I already had posted the vote; and you can't edit it. So for other voters: DVD = VHS (at least for now :)). Or maybe they should vote "On television", because that must be around the same time as the VHS release. And considering sbk1234's initial question it might be more appropriate.

To be honest ... I don't remember. I certainly didn't see it in the cinema first, because it wasn't shown here in this part of Germany back then. It was probably a tv broadcast.

^ Schön zu sehen, dass hier auch ein paar deutsche Fans zu finden sind! Viele Grüße in die Hauptstadt!

I taped the extended version off my local ABC affiliate one Sunday morning in 1992. Even more amazingly, they showed it with limited commercials -- there was only one break, right after Saavik's line "It's one of ours; it's Reliant!" -- so I was able to leave a tape in the VCR while my family went to church, and didn't have to worry about farting around with tape speeds or buying a 150-minute tape to accommodate the commercials. That copy managed to hold together until the Director's Edition was released, so I've never actually seen the original cut of TWOK.
