I'm not crying, your crying.

I like most Star Trek. I'm a TOS guy at heart which I love, I really like TNG. DS9 was amazing and is right behind TOS. Voyager, well I don't hate it but it's pretty bad on average. Enterprise came around at the end but to little too late. Disco... well I hate it. Seriously. Just hate it. And that made me sad.

I had such hopes for Disco and they were dashed. I kinda despaired (was depressed) that we'd ever get good Trek again (or at the very least what I considered good Trek). And then Picard. I was very dubious having been burned by Disco and while there a few minor things I don't care for, by the end of the first episode my face was wet with tears of joy. Well written, well acted. Slowly filling out the world and building the mystery. So good. I just wanted to share my joy with everyone else who's enjoying the show.

I have a soft spot in my heart for all of Star Trek good and bad but Discovery is a bridge too far even for me. I hate it. I'm so glad Picard exists. I won't say I'd given up hope of enjoying a Trek series again but the idea of slogging through years of Michael Boredom as the only series on air did not appeal to me. The only parts of that show I like are when they do TOS callbacks whereas I prefer the actual storyline and characters of Picard to the TNG callbacks. And that's after only two episodes!

I love Picard, but between the two shows I'm still giving the edge to Discovery, especially season 1.

It built a new Star Trek world and made bold decisions all around, in aesthetics, storytelling, characters.

When it fails, it's usually because it has "gone big and failed."

I am also excited to see what a more established DIS does in season 3.

The writing in PIC has been stronger so far, and the performances have been superb.

I appreciate what both shows have done in expanding what's possible in Star Trek and in creating a more "real," compelling universe.

I’m not going to be truly happy until I get a proper Post Nemesis Trek Show; with a crew, a ship and the urge to explore.

I enjoyed Discovery and was just happy for new Trek, but the last 2 episodes of Picard make Discovery look like trash.

I'll still check out season 3. Considering the behind the scenes drama of the first 2 seasons I'm hopeful it will find is feet now.
I presonally dont think Discovery is trash but there is no doubt that certain decisions really backfired badly and open goals and quick easy wins were completely ignored, certain individuals behind the scenes tried to be clever and ended up looking like fools.

Its not the casts fault they were just doing as they were told.

I have no problem with change, adaptation and evolution but I got the feeling Discovery S1 suffered from the same curse Star Wars episode 8 did, the folly of subverting expectations, the need to be contrary just for contrary sake rather than having a valid story reason for it, the damage was so great Disney have put their plans on hold (the Mandalorian is great though).

It cost the show dearly but it may be that the lessons were learned and all future shows will benefit accordingly, or perhaps its really about whether or not the show runner actually cares or is just going through the motions of caring about the subject.

S2 was better but that was in large part due to the presence of Pike, Spock, Una and improved scripts, we shall have to see how S3 fares without them.

Star Trek: Picard
&
Star Wars: The Mandalorian

Are both very high up on my watch table, Discovery is still on there but its low/mid table at best but that could easily change.

I have really, really enjoyed Picard so far. I do also enjoy Discovery and got my wife into it. In rewatching, I found Discovery even more interesting than I did on the first watch. I was impressed with how much foreshadowing was incorporated into the show. The writers even incorporated things into the show that I had forgotten from prior series. Ex. Pike burning the remaining shuttle fuel to use as a flare is directly from The Galileo Seven in which Spock uses the same maneuver. I missed it on multiple watches until I rewatched that episode of TOS. Watching Captain Lorca after knowing who he is is also very interesting as his decisions make a LOT more sense. I am very excited for the rest of Picard S1 and Disco S3.

I'm so-so on DSC. I like that it's different, and many of the actors/characters, and S2 was an improvement with Mount and Peck. But the writing is often awful/soapy. So far the writing on PIC is more elegant and nuanced (Chabon?). It's not flawless by any means but am looking forward to seeing possible heights it will reach. And I'm just as interested in its supporting characters as I am in the titular lead.

Cool.
Another thread that’s about one thing, but quickly turns into a Discovery hating thread
When it's the natural direction of discussion, don't fight it. ;)

The main difference between STD S2 and STP S1:

- STD S2:
Main character has connection to beloved original character (Spock). Evil Admirals create an A.I (Control) that oproceeds to kill them all but use their likenesses to continue on a plan to spread it's A.I.-ness and ultimate destroy all coporeal life. Main character uses her connectio with beloved original character to find out evil A. I.'s plan and stop it.

- STP S1:
Beloved Main character has connection to another beloved original character (Data). Second beloved character has an A.I 'duagher' created. An Evil Admiral conspires with Romulans to capture or destroy the A.I daughter because a secret sect of Romulan spies despise A.I. and don't want them to propigate. (Oh and said Sect or a rogue A.I. may have been responsible for an A.I. attack on the Mars Shipyards which ended a Federation plan to evacuate Romulus before a supernova exploded.) Main character is ciontact by te A.I. daughter, but she is destroyed. He uses his connection with the second beloved (but dead) character to discover that there were two daughters - the second one which he feels he must save...but he won't ask any of his old 1701-D crewmates to help because he likes them and they like him, and heknows they'd all do it in a second; but since this might get them all killed...to do this...he turns to a person he knows hates him...and in the process will certainly foil the Evil Admiral's plan and save the A. I.

The thread was about OPs feeling about various Trek shows (mainly Discovery) vs their feelings towards Picard.

If this isn't the right thread for people to give their opinions on Discovery vs Picard then what is?
