I'm Glad TNG Ended When It Did

I'm with those who were annoyed by the constant long-lost-missing family member device, even if it did produce mostly good episodes. For me it's the combination of family member + long lost/unknown cliche that gets under my skin. Please. Really? A long-lost twin. *sigh*

If TNG had just ended with "All Good Things...", then I would have missed them:vulcan:, but for better or worse we got GENERATIONS, FIRST CONTACT, INSURRECTION and NEMESIS.

I remember when it was announced that TNG was ending. A lot of people were upset and wondering why a show that was still getting good ratings would be taken off the air. But despite the good ratings, I think it was time for TNG to end, and not just because they needed to move the cast to the big screen. By season 7, it was obvious the writers had run out of ideas. You know things are bad when you start bringing in the relatives of the characters. Look at how many times they did that in Season 7.

Picard - His son, or rather someone who was thought to be his son.

Data - His mother

Geordi - His mother and father

Worf - His brother who we hadn't heard about before.

Crusher - Dead grandmother

Troi - Dead sister.

With Voyager, we were promised something new and fresh, but what we got were recycled TNG stories. Different ship, different characters, but essentially the same show. If you wanna know what Season 8 of TNG would've looked like, just watch Voyager.

Family was meant to be a theme in season 7, for the most part it was not a STRONG part of the season. Very disappointing, standalone concept episodes came out best that year.

I agree. I hate when a series become extended and goes on and on just to exploit fanbase despite the slump in writing quality. It is an undeniable result of being a franchise to make money for the studio. Consequences are the end of creative writing , banality , lots of meaningless filler episodes , topics out of series theme. Even Star Trek has fallen for this as we can see in Enterprise series and Star Trek (2009) movie. Maybe you agree or not but that is why I hold Babylon 5 such a high regard. Its creator had a plan and idea when and how to end the series and developed whole story accordingly.

At least Star Trek TNG made its in right time without lowering its standarts.

TNG was on the air one or two seasons too long.. It took them two seasons of stumbling to get going and then two seasons to figure out that they needed to call it a day sooner. I think Season 7 is the cause of the decline of the franchise.. Had the suits let TNG stay off the air at least 6 months before going to features, the whole franchise fatigue issue may have never happened.. Think about it.. They went right from the finale of TNG into full production of a film, while readying the pilot for another series while another was running concurrently. If they ended TNG the same year they started DS9, VOY may have started later and not shared so many storylines with the other series..The creative team would have had more time to recharge their batteries, bring in some fresher blood or even work on other things. It would have set a precedent for a successful model, instead of just being a repeatedly ignored warning from the creative team.

That's right.. I blame TNG's Season 7 for the decline of the Post TNG franchise.
Masaka is Waitiiiiiinnggg.

Another family cliche I noticed is that the family is somehow dysfunctional or fragmented for dramatic effect.

Worf is an orphan from his biological parents.

Worf resents his older foster brother.

Riker is estranged from his father, no mother.

Picard and his older brother resents each other.

Data is an orphan and in conflict with his "brother".

Tasha orphan, her sister seems to resent her.

Geordi is the only one who seemed to have an intact family.

I agree that the seven season slowed down a lot. Some of the episodes were either anti climatic or downright boring.

But it still ended in the right way I think. The movies on the other hand had a part in the post decline Trek I agree..

TNG season 8

The enterprise destroys an entire borg fleet

picard violates the prime directive all the time

data starts singing opera

laforge and troi start a love-hate relationship

there are annoying kids

So, what you're saying is, it would have turned into Voyager.
