I'm calling it now (spoilers)

Having just seen tonight's episode on CTV at 7pm, I have figured out how this is going to go down.

Spoilers!

Locke said he needed to take all the candidates with him in order to get off the island. Presumably with Jacob dead and no one left to take his place, his prison will be unlocked (heh). I predict he will succeed in getting everyone off that he believes he needs to (or at least those who survive to the end).

But, what Locke doesn't realize is that Jacob put Ben back on the candidate list by touching him as he died. Ben is a candidate again but Locke doesn't know it.

He will succeed in getting everyone off and convincing (or forcing) Ben to stay behind. But he will find himself still trapped, because Ben will replace Jacob. And everyone else will get away.

You heard it here first.

I like it, but I don't think it would work.

We've been following these characters for six years now. It's only good storytelling to make/have them actively save the day. They have to beat Smokie somehow otherwise they were just... there. They were just viewers like the rest of us. That's not very good storytelling or emotionally very compelling.

The Protagonist's on the story have to make the ending happen, not just stand by watching it happen or not even realize that it happened.

It's a good theory, really, but I'm doubting it too. In fact, I've been doubting that anyone will "protect" the island, when it's all done, ever since they announced the title of the finale. A lot of people have been biting the bait, that the title "The End" was just simple writing, but I think that title has meaning to our story, as in, it will be the end of all this somehow

I could be wrong, but it really does seem to be at least plausible

Interesting theory but I don't think that's how it will play out. Locke wants all of the candidates with him so he can arrange for their deaths. He can't kill them himself but he can get others to do it. I suspect that Widmore has a plan that is very hazardous to the islanders, at least those in close proximity. Locke probably wants to make sure that the candidates are in close proximity! With no replacements for Jacob living, MiB is probably free to go. That's the endgame.

Will the characters get off the island. Well, they'll exist off the island in the alternate timeline. How exactly that transpires, I'm not sure. But, it's a good timeline, overall, for them to live in. They may or may not remember their lives on the island. It's interesting that they played with the concept of amnesia in this episode. Foreshadowing?

I agree that The End means something. And especially in connection to the previous title which in essence means From Eternity. This is the end of Jacob vs MiB, the end of their game. We've seen that they've had many round. Tons of candidates and names scratched off the list. Their game has gone on for quite some time. We'll reach the end game. There will not be a next round of a protector (Jacob replacement) versus MiB. We will see the resolution of that match. Personally, I think it'll be the pawns from the different sides joining together to win. There is no winning solution when they are opposed.

I think that however they "end" the show, there will be something left open for possible movies or a spinoff.

What if The End ends in Locke (Evil) winning and the earth being completely destroyed in an apocalypse?

That will leave a few people going whoa! didn't see that coming!!

Wouldn't put it past them, maybe two versions of reality saving one ends the other. The again how is there 2 different realities ? I mean why not 100 and if so does itm atter what happens in the Island version, which is really real.

At this point, they could actually get away with something like that. We've come a long way since our poor survivors were bitching about water consumption.

No joke. They've accomplished so much with this series I could see them getting away with any number of crazy endings. This is the show that last season made us think someone who was alive was actually dead (Jin) and someone who was dead was actually alive (Locke). They managed to make the character I hated in season one, Sawyer, my favorite character by the end of the series.

All good points, but I think the end will be relatively straightforward. Occam's Razor folks. :)

Occam's Razor tells me that LOST's ending will be the opposite of straightforward. Have you even watched the show?

Perhaps, though I don't expect it to be along the lines of Aaron going back in time and splitting into two personalities. ;)
