I'm an Adult Now

Being an adult is when you find yourself saying all the things your parents used to say, that you always thought were so dull and unnecessary... or when you first say the phrase "I'm turning into my mother/father"...

I recently caught myself saying something to that effect. It was... disturbing.

Hmm..well I don´t find it such a bad idea to make it not too easy to get the hands on alcohol as long as possible. Still...whatever the law, people find ways around I guess.
Here the legal age to buy all kind of alcohol is 18...and for the softer stuff like beer its 16.

To the question: I am not sure. At 18 I did not feel like an adult, even I legally was one. I think moving out was one of the big steps. By now I sometimes feel like an adult and sometimes don´t. Then again...how is an adult supposed to feel?
I think getting more and more mature just is a life-long prozess.

At 26, I don't feel like one.... and I now know adulthood and age are completely unrelated. At work there are people twice my age that make important decisions based on the most petty and childish of motivations. I would doubt the actual existence of adulthood without the knowledge that there are indeed grownups in the world making grownup choices.

Research (from a documentary I saw at some point in my life) seems to claim that people start "feeling" like an adult in their mid-to-late 20s. I'm 25 right now, and while I feel like more of an adult than I used to, I don't feel like I'm done growing up.

I will say, though, that calling the gas company the other day to report a gas leak in my house and then subsequently calling to reschedule a dentist appointment made me feel like an adult. Those are things my mom should have to do!

I don't think I ever felt like an adult, but this past Valentine's Day my wife and I went to a cabaret where the performer was a woman "pushing 30" who detailed her 5 breakups in song (funnier than it sounds), and I remember when she was a young latchkey kid at my library. So now I just feel old.

I felt like an adult a few weeks ago when my iron broke. I bought a new one, and I was excited when it was so much better than my old one. :(

Seriously though, I'm 27 in under two months and I hardly feel mature and like an adult. I do my job, I rent my own house, but inside I'm still an overexcited 16 year old!

I think the problem for me is that being an adult is surprisingly easy. Go to work, pay the bills. Other than that, I pretty much do whatever I want.

To me, booze is booze, no different, and one should be able to drink whatever type.

When I went and registered for the Selective Service.

One of the most pointless creations around, legal blackmail is a better name for it.

In the UK, there seems to be double standards. They consider someone to be an adult at 16 when it suits their purpose to get more money out of them, such as paying adult prices for buses and cinemas etc, yet they're not considered "adult" enough for other stuff such as voting, drinking, smoking, purchasing pornographic material and stuff like that until 18.

I think my first "adult realization" moment came when I was about 30. I was looking at the people in the chow hall on base, and I found myself thinking, "When did they let all these kids into my Air Force?" :D

On a related note, I'm required to wear a suit and tea to work when I go to one of my two schools, and I have never once felt anything but silly in it. I guess I still associate such attire with professional adults, and I haven't yet begun to feel like that's what I am. Maybe I never will.

Wow, I knew the Japanese loved tea, but I didn't know they liked to wear it. That's awesome. :bolian:

;)

A few other moments for me when I realized I was an adult.

When the actor they cast as Superman was older than me. It's happened twice now!

All the players on my favourite NHL team are younger than me. Some of them were even born after I finished highschool!

The first song I remember hearing on the radio was When Will I See You Again by The Three Degrees and I'll never forget hearing that song for the first time on a "golden oldies" station when I was in my mid-20s. I felt old rather than mature.

Nowdays it's people my age who are grandparents that do my head in.

I think that it was the point when I went out with a bunch of family to dinner and picked up the entire bill.

Someone needs to invent a tea tie. Instant refreshment on the go.

I remember being somewhat freaked out the first time I asked someone on a date and she said she'd check to see if she could get a babysitter. Then came the day I asked someone out and she said she couldn't because her daughter was coming home from college that weekend; I actually had a dizzy spell. :rommie:

That would kind of suck-- but in a good way. :bolian:

I know what you mean! One day I saw this lovely young woman with a toddler in tow. I mean she was a real looker. Then I realized I had taught her Sunday School class about 10-15 years earlier.
