I'm an Adult Now

Being an adult means reaching that level of maturity where you no longer need to impress people by acting like an adult.

There are all sort of social ideas about when a person is an adult, such as when one gets their first job, when they are old enough to vote, when they leave their parents' home, or when they first have sex.

So how do you define being an adult?

I guess I've always thought of the term in a fairly legal/scientific way. Adulthood is either A. the age at which you are legally recognized as an adult in your country of residence or B. the point at which you reach physical maturity.

In terms of social adulthood, I would argue with others here that it's a point of independence from your parents (financial or otherwise). I'm 26 and I don't "feel" overly adult unless I'm around my younger cousins (which is once a year now that I live abroad :(

With a name like MetalPants, I'm not sure you're ever truly an adult ;)
Thanks! Mind if I use that as my signature?

Being an adult is when you find yourself saying all the things your parents used to say, that you always thought were so dull and unnecessary... or when you first say the phrase "I'm turning into my mother/father"...

when you turn 18 you're an adult dose not matter how immature you are

im 23 now and all the awesomeness on being my own "man" has completely worn off, i wish i was still in high school - i could of made so many better decisions (like giving a shit and applying myself and getting into the air force academy) instead i played world of warcraft

Being an adult isn't as much fun as I thought it was going to be. There is a lot more working and paying bills and not much staying up late and watching dirty movies.

Shoot I had sex when I was 15

You are still waaay young enough to turn that around, get a good education and set yourself on the path you want! Don't rule out being an Air Force officer someday, if that is your goal...

Oh, how I wish I was that lucky, I did not get laid till five years onwards, which sucked.

I envy you.

Hmm, I'm not sure I really know what that means in this context. Usually when people say something about acting like an adult they mean a certain type of maturity. Or is there a different meaning here?

Not in the least. Just give me 10% of all the money you make off that as your signature.

It means that much of what passes for "adulthood" is affectation and posturing; there are few people who truly mature.

Being an adult is the freedom to choose your own destiny. Hopefully being old enough and wise enough to understand the responsibilities that come with that.

Yeah, this.

I was sixteen when I began living on my own. I became an adult then but I wouldn't say I was wise enough to understand the responsibilities. I'm now 23 and I'd say I'm an adult but I've got a long way to go in a lot of aspects.

I've been independent for seven years but I know full well I'm not yet truly wise.

Hey, I only went back to school at 28 and things couldn't be better for me now. It's never too late to get your life on track.

Heh, I'm 42 and am doing the going-back-to-uni-for-a-new-career thing. It's certainly never too late. However my dad is helping us out financially as I'm not working while I study, so I guess I'm not an adult. ;)

^ I had to move back in with my Mom and Stepfather when I went back to school so don't feel too bad.

Coming to the realization that one is an adult doesn't just happen overnight. You don't wake up one day and say, "Geez, I'm a grown-up!" It's no more different from going through different stages in your life, such as adolescence and old age. Different changes in your psychology and physiology begin to manifest themselves, and to me, being an adult--just like being a child, teenager, or elderly--is an on-going process.

When I turned 18, sure, I somewhat felt like an adult. When I had my first beer, when I was able to find a full-time stable employment, when I entered into a relationship, when I first bought a house, I knew I was an adult. Even as an adult, I don't claim to be all mature. I still have room for personal development and improvement.
