If you weren't the gender that you are now....

apparently my parents were convinced i was going to be male. they never picked a girl's name.

i'd guess since i was named Scott so it was 'something short no one could shorten', that had i been female i might've wound up as Sarah or Sally or something...

If I had been a boy, I would have been Kevin Scott. Not bad, but I'm glad I'm a girl! :p Mom though about naming me after a different sorority sister of hers than the one I was named for- I would have been Carol Anne instead of Judith Anne.

Probably a blessing, considering Poltergeist.

My parents decided it was going to be either Kim (girl) or Daniël (boy).

Btw what's up with the double first names? :vulcan:
Are they really that common in the USA?

Interesting to see if anyone's parents settled on a name that could apply to either a man or a woman (Hilary, Lindsay, Beverly, etc.) or a name that in its shortened form could also apply to either (Chris, Alex, Bobby, etc.).

Well, my parents never considered a boy's mame because they knew I was going to be a girl, but had I been male, my mother tells me I would have been named Nathan. Not terrible, but I'm glad I'm a girl. Natalie is much prettier.

I don't know about the others, but I was including what would have been my first and middle names.

My nickname / shortened form, which is actually now my legal name, can be either.

I knew someone would say that. "They're heeeeere!"

I want to say Fifi Trixibelle though.

:guffaw: That was the worst celebrity baby name ever! Well, maybe not worse than Pilot Inspektor...

I would have been a Jim or a Jeff had I been born a male. I'm really glad I ended up a girl; I would not have been happy being stuck with "Jim Jones", especially since I was born around the same time as the Jonestown mass suicide.

It's never occurred to me to ask.

Me neither.

Same here. But now I'm glad this topic was here, because it got me curious and I called my mom and the answer was kind of strange.

My first name is Patrick and my middle name is Richard. If I had been a girl my mom said I would have definitely been named Patricia and my middle name would probably have been Katherine after the aunt mentioned below.

I had always assumed Richard was after my great-uncle, but according to my mom it was after my uncle Richard who isn't even a blood relation and whom I've never even felt the slightest bit close to (and vice versa).

Apparently back then my mom and dad had a much closer relationship with my aunt Kathy (my dad's sister) and uncle Rich, to the point where they named my middle name after him and made him and my aunt my sister's godfather and godmother apparently. My sister is five years younger than I am, so they must have been close for quite a while.

But something clearly happened because my mom started acting all strange and wouldn't give me an answer about why they weren't close any more, because it was something of a shock to me since I never knew they were ever all that friendly beyond just being polite to each other at parties. I got the hint that it was some problem between my uncle and my dad I guess, but nothing more than that. Nothing involving my mom, but she was kind of weirded out by whatever it was anyway.

So, this question prompted some mildly entertaining drama.

I'd have been Katie (Katherine), which might have prompted a different name for my younger cousin (who has my surname too- well...her maiden name).

Good to see that my starting a thread has led to some real-life manoeuvres. I think I've started a monster here... :)
