ABORT!
McQuarrie's Enterprise design would be a good jumping-off place for thinking about what the ship should look like in any new incarnation - there's a guy who's done a wonderful elaboration of it over at www.scifi-meshes.com. I'll post the link but unfortunately you have to be a member to see most of the images:

It's a start, but a lot more detailed thinking about the practical engineering aspects of the ship should go into it, again ala Avatar.
I think for Star Trek coming back to the small screen would have to be as reimagined as possible while still remaining Star Trek. Adifferent crew, a different ship - ion powered and a reason why all aliens speak English. Hey Dennis, how about some transhuman authorities?
Far easier to just fashion a wholly original series that is its own thing.I think for Star Trek coming back to the small screen would have to be as reimagined as possible while still remaining Star Trek. I've seen quite a bit of truly stellar work come out of Sci-fi meshes (both Trek related and not), but I have to go with Hartzilla here. That thing IS sorta... well, fugly. Not sure there's a better word. I look at the overall shape and I can't help but think of a Constitution that was partially flattened in some horrendous, implausible accident.I would like to preface the post by saying I mean no disrespect towards the guy who designed the Enterprise from Planet of the Titans or you but,
You Want The to use the starship Fuglyprise for a trek movie?![]()
Funny, this is what I've always said about the original TOS Enterprise. Also I know adding detail can make things look better, but you can add as much detail to that abomination as you want but it will probably still look like a piece of crap cross between a Constitution and a Star Destroyer.
Yeah, the UT - despite how ridiculous it is when you really stop and think about it - has pretty much been accepted as part of the Trekverse. For better or worse, this setting is one where communication between individuals who have not learnt each other's languages is simply not a problem (except when it IS a problem, on those rare occasions when a new language is "too complex" for the UT to decipher right away, or whatever the explanation is.I think things are at the point now where no one is going to bat an eye about aliens speaking English. And why an ion powered ship? Warp drive is fine.
This depends on the idea, of course, but can be very true. Yes, it's important not to rehash; yes, doing something fresh and original can definitely be a good thing... but you go too far in that direction, and eventually you hit a point where there's no real reason to set it in Trek (or in any other pre-existing setting, really). At that point, you're better off with something entirely new. It can be a fine line, and of course, in this case I'm not sure preciesly what xortex meant by "as reimagined as possible".Far easier to just fashion a wholly original series that is its own thing.
I certainly won't call you silly, especially since this is something I'm doing myself. All of my story ideas involve Starfleet crews in which the females outnumber the males by roughly the same ratio that the shows tend to use (only in reverse, of course).Go ahead. Call me silly, but I'm going to make the crew actually have more female characters than male, and they're going to be awesome!
For some who profess to love Star Trek they also seem hellbent into morphing it into something else. It's far more honest and more creatively liberating to just fashion something wholly original.Far easier to just fashion a wholly original series that is its own thing.
Naw, I want to play in the Star Trek sandbox. Not that other one where those Transformer bullies took some of the original sand with them and made it their own, no. I want the original big sand box. I want to add, create and leave my own great castle along with all the other castles!
If Paramount Pictures ask you to make the next Star Trek film What would you gives us an reboot, an sequel , or something totally different what your take?, outta what tv series would you make an movie out of.
Absolutely Right. For some who profess to love Star Trek they also seem hellbent into morphing it into something else. It's far more honest and more creatively liberating to just fashion something wholly original.
He was honest enough. He kept the core of Trek, which is essentially, "the early 60s notion of modern secular liberalism, as embodied by Starfleet, conquers the universe." As long as you keep that element, you can drag it hither an yon and still be Trek. A lot of the re-imagining ideas have no political element, so it's hard to judge whether they would stay true to the core of Trek or ignore/destroy it. Trek is not a certain species, look for the spaceships, plotline, time period or technology. It is a certain view of the proper political alignment for all sentient species.Ironically, J.J. Abrams said it best: “I figure if you re-imagine something you should just imagine something else." Shame he lacked the courage of that conviction.
TOS also had a modicum of intelligence. Abrams left that out too.He was honest enough. Holy Shit, Babylon 5 was Star Trek?Trek is not a certain species, look for the spaceships, plotline, time period or technology. It is a certain view of the proper political alignment for all sentient species.
