Penny Johnson: good actress, established character. One concern that's been expressed about that in the past is that it would have left Kira as the sole female regular. I can agree that the optics on that are pretty terrible even if it would make sense from a storytelling angle.
I disagree, as I liked the Dax continuity. As for writing in someone else...how would that be in any way different from what we essentially got?
It killed the flow of the series for a while, with all the useless standalones dedicated to developing the Ezri character....who was ultimately a pointless waste of screentime.
Ezri: Bad on every level.
Ezri: Bad on every level.
For me, the element that always felt so random was that Jadzia would decide to go see the orb and pray to the prophets, it didn't feel like her.
I was surprised to recently rewatch "Emissary" and be reminded that literally the first thing that happens to Jadzia when she arrives on DS9 is that Sisko takes her directly to the orb, where she almost immediately has a vision.
If they really had to involve the orb in her death, there was a missed opportunity to go full circle on that. She had an orb experience at a key turning point in her life before, which provides justification for why she might go seeking one again at this new turning point she is now facing. You could have made the change with just 2 or 3 lines.
They could have also thrown in a line highlighting that Jadzia was remaining on the station during the mission as a direct result of "Change Of Heart", Worf and Jadzia no longer going on missions together.
I guess I ultimately don't want to rewrite Jadzia's death too much, though I find it dramatically ineffective as presented. But I think all the ways to make it work are right there already, they just didn't properly emphasize the correct elements.
True, but after that point, Ezri basically became Jadzia 2.0.If we didn't have Ezri, we wouldn't have had some really great episodes about the painful relationship between Ezri and Worf. Those were wonderful complex episodes, and starting with a completely new character or omitting Dax entirely would have been a loss.
I'm surprised so many people would change it to Dax dying too. The symbiont moving from host to host is the most interesting aspect about the trill who are otherwise just humans with dots, we have seen snippets of that happening but Terry Farrell leaving the show allowed the transition to a permanent new host to be explored so I would definitely keep Dax alive.
I also wouldn't have her die in Change of Heart, sure it made sense narratively but death doesn't always make sense, there isn't always a big sacrifice or a dramatic decision to be made, people just slip in the bath tub and break their neck sometimes so I have no problem with Dax getting a "wrong place, wrong time" death but I would change the details, Dukat force choking her was a bit cartoony.
I would give her a better reason to be at the temple, thanking the prophets didn't feel like it was in character for her, maybe let her repair something because she lost a bet with O'Brien (which would have the added benefit of torturing him some more because he blames himself), Dukat beams in, knocks her out with his fists and proceeds to the orb. There's no need for supernatural powers or even weapons, people tend to forget that punching people can be deadly and that could have been a reminder of that, there's too much of "Oh it was just a lead pipe to the head, they'll be fine in time for dinner" on tv.
Me neither, I think a change of heart death would have been impactful and it would have been very memorable but I also like more random deaths because they seem to be rarer on tv.I'm not so sure about the second part of what you've said here, ...
Really? Jadzia was still more confident, more athletic, more reverential toward Klingon culture, and indeed, more of a science and policy wonk. Ezri was largely immature, insecure, nerdy, sometimes more cynical. There were traits they shared, but they were not the same character.True, but after that point, Ezri basically became Jadzia 2.0.
I cannot relate to letting a loved one die because something else is more important in the bigger picture, that's very abstract and doesn't happen often in the real world.
