It comes down to the amount of money you want to spend right now. It is either about $100 or $300. new so there is a huge price difference. Also it depends if you are a huge TNG fan or not. Personally I'm not.
Alternatively you could purchase Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection on Blu-ray

(first 6 films only)

and also purchase a $100-$150. Blu-ray player (with BD-Live Profile 2.0).
It should be able to downconvert to play on a standard TV and you'll be set for down the road.
This is what I would do.

I think he might be asking if we had to choose between the TOS movies or TNG existing which would we keep.

This is how I interpret the thread, too.

In which case, if there'd been a TNG type series, it would have picked-up directly after ST6 and followed characters picking up where the retiring Kirk & Co. had left off.

How about TOS vs DS9?

Sorry, Spock, but the choice is very easy and I can't change it even for you. At least now you'll have more time to visit a certain space station more often.

As for the original question: I have to go with TNG. Trek was always stronger on TV, overall and on average, than on the big screen, there are far more TNG episodes than there are TOS movies (180something:6), and there are far more good TNG episodes than there are good TOS movies (FF is awful, TVH is too goofy and even worse than the worst of TNG in its ham-fisted contemporary social message, and TMP is boring).

Now if it were TOS (the show) vs TNG, that would be a different result. And TOS movies would win against VOY.

Now, if the question were about keeping TOS itself, rather than the TOS movies, then I'd have to think about it. But the TOS movies, as good as some of them are, are only six stories. With TNG you have, what, over 200 stories? Even accounting for the fact that some of them are clunkers, that's still a good chunk of entertainment there.

Meh. I doubt I could find six TNG episodes that I could sit through again.

Everytime I watch TNG now, after a break of not seeing it much over the past couple years, I am reminded how absolutely great a show it is. YMMV, of course.

Understand, though, that my selection of TNG is not a dismissal of the quality of the TOS films. I love the TOS films, even TMP and TFF. But I love TNG too, so given the choice between about 12 hours of stuff I love of over 200 hours of stuff I love, I'll take the latter.

(I've always though Star Trek worked best as a TV series any way. TOS was much better than the TOS films. TNG was much better than the TNG films.)

TNG, of course. Many of the TOS movies are great but TNG still has much more good episodes. Losing TNG would also mean losing 178 episodes.

Hands down TNG. The movies are good, but I enjoyed TNG more. Plus, I'd like having a whole series to watch rather than a few movies.
