If/When Picard retires, who should be the next captain?

^Tuvok is a full commander, AFAIK. At least he was on the cover of "The Red King".

And as for the Titan...I'd give it to Christine Vale (with Tuvok as XO) if Riker took the Enterprise.

^ Kira has left starfleet for a religious career and Tuvok is Lt Cmdr(?) so he doesn't have near the rank for consideration, nor I would wager the diplomatic credentials.

Oohh I haven't got that far with my DS9 reading yet. I hope I forget it. Tuvie may get a Captain's rank in time for it to happen. It's happened to other characters, I mean look at Nu Kirk for example cadet to Captain on the basis of one mission!!!

...Or even Ezri, who got a field promotion from Lt.Cmdr..

Someone recommended Saavik to me and I like this one. Alien, female, and familiar. Much of the upcoming diplomatic missions will no doubt be around the Romulans so a Vulcan whose husband is living on Romulus could be interesting but perhaps a conflict of interests.

This would be interesting to see. She'd be what, about 120 years old or so at this point, right? It'd be interesting to see what kind of person she is now as compared to the young cadet we saw taking the Kobayashi Maru test back when.

Not Geordi?

Geordi would work, having the rank and the experience of being Captain of Challenger - but whether he'd want the job is another matter. He'd most likely prefer staying Chief Engineer.

But the setup is there in case of need, I guess

I would love to see a non-human character in command of the Enterprise, we've never seen a non-human character command one of the E. How many alien Starfleet ship captains have we seen?

Racism in action - the purple skins can clean the warp cores, the men with chicken nuggets stuck on their heads can fix the replicators but it has to be a white dude or lady in charge of the Big-E. Think about it, the whole thing is about a crusty old white dude cruising the universe teaching the purple skins how to get along.

That's why in my next book "Star Trek: white hating purple skin", the hero is a proud purple prince who's tribe invented warp drive while earthmen were hiding in caves and scared of the sun.

First, thanks for making me spit a mouthful of Sprite all over my desk.

Second, you make a very good point.

Agreed. I don't think he WANTED to be captain the first time. He knows the ship and crew better than anyone and no doubt can command "by the book" but he lacks the battle and diplomatic experience for the flagship.

I like the idea of Saavik. Aside from the Vulcan's Soul trilogy, we haven't heard a lot of what she's up to these days, and it would be interesting to see her get her shot at the center chair of the Enterprise at last.

But I don't want to see someone transferred from wherever to become the new Captain. If they already have a ship, I say that they keep it. I'd be game to see an entirely new Captain.

And I definitely do NOT want to see Data become Captain. Let him stay dead. The way it happened, I have severe issues with, but he still died, and bringing characters back from the dead cheapens the effect of deaths in the first place. And the way that Countdown presented how he came back seemed to be at odds with Data's personality - he would want B4 to grow and attempt to become his own being, not overwrite his brother's mind, limited that it may be.

Though I must say, while I can see a stationary life suiting Picard the family man, I have a hard time seeing him being satisfied with such a life over a long period of time, so I can't really picture him retiring or not continuing to follow Kirk's advice of 'don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship.'

If Picard does retire from Starfleet, he'll likely become an Ambassador. He's got more diplomatic chops than most of the Diplomatic Corps. Of course it doesn't hurt that he has been the Arbiter of Succession for a Klingon Chancellor and has who knows how many successful first contacts, the gold standard for diplomacy, under his belt.

As for who might get the Enterprise, Worf is more than qualified and has definitely learned his mistakes of the past. The fact that he has been an ambassador/diplomat would also count as a plus. Worf would expect nothing less than the best from his crew, as he does now under Picard. I'd like to see what Worf's command style is like without the net.

I like the Idea of worf being the next captin. it would bring the klingon alliance to harty pact. all so his time as an ambassador did him well. so yeah worf.

How about Tom Paris? I'm figuring that we are still a few years (both story and real time) away from Picard's retirement. By that time Tom and Belana's business should be concluded.

Plus it would be a fitting continuation. The last Captain of the Enterprise had once served as the Arbiter of Succession for the Chancellor of the Klingon Empire and the latest one is the father of the Messiah!

Captain W. Crusher--he saved the Ent-D more times than anyone else, while still in his teens. Plus, he's probably traveled the universe more than anyone else outside of Q.

Henry Rollins. Not a fictional character, but the actual musician/poet/comedian/actor/human adrenal gland.

I'd go for Riker as captain of the E-E (no one wanted it more than him) and Commander B4 (Data) as XO. Worf can cool his heels for awhile.
