If TOS is your favorite series, has it always been?

Yes. I grew up on it, weeknights during the early 80's. BBC2 6pm, in the spare room, while my parents watched the news on the other side. By the early 90's, I found myself defending the show to classmates, who prefered a glossy TNG.

Perhaps blasphemous, but Enterprise is my second favourite. It had a fantastic pilot (most exciting of the lot, imo) and a clutch of decent stories during an otherwise poor S1/2. Somewhere around Season 3 I fell for it week after week, consistantly and didn't stop watching.

I grew up watching TOS in syndication in the 1970s. I like some episodes of TNG and even ENT, but nothing compares to the original.

It's my favorite with DS9 a distant second. The other series have some worthy episodes, but by and large I've come to disregard them as derivative and diluted. When I really want to push the whole grognard image with friends, I point out they're in an alternate time line from Star Trek, so who cares anyway?

Oh, the "air quotes" for anything related to the new "Star Trek" movie are great for a slew of 's.

Always. The other spin-offs were so radically different, and produced with an entirely different sense of production and storytelling that they really never ever even resembled Star Trek, as produced in the 60's. Never got into the other series at all.

TOS all the way followed by (and I'm shocked so many are saying this) DS9...same sentiment on DS9 almost gave up the first two years

Nope. Hasn't always been my favorite.

I grew up on TNG, so that was the Star Trek for me for like... forever. I enjoyed the TOS movies far more than the TNG movies, and I've lately gotten into TOS big-time, because I've been bored with Berman-style Trek (and CBS having it online helps a lot). It's probably my overall favorite ATM, followed by DS9 and TNG.

TOS is the best. Best starship design. Best characters and character interaction. Best Star Trek episode ever (City on the Edge of Forever).

Of course today it seems a little dated, but it's the foundation for all we hold dear in Trek canon (oh no, there's that word).

For those of us who watched it in the 1960's it will always be the best.

Interesting to see a lot of people say DS9 is their close second favorite. I'd have expected more to say TNG. DS9 was a bit too much on the 'soap opera' angle for me... something that plagued the first two seasons. Things definitely got better, especially with the Dominion element and finally getting the Defiant into the mix (so they could have more prolonged focus away from DS9). I do have to admit my interest in TNG has waned... maybe I need to revisit DS9 some more. :)

I've gone through phases where I don't watch TOS for a long while. At times it has been a year or more (certainly before the DVD's came out). And the Star Trek series on at the time captured my interest over watching TOS. There was a point where I liked TNG more than TOS. Even at one time with Voyager (during season 4... it all went downhill after that).

But over time... I don't know if it's because I'm getting older, but I pop on a DVD for a momentary free hour and watch an episode, and in the back of my mind I think about the quality of what I'm seeing... and I really like this series. Even when I go about watching one of my least favorite episodes... there's always something of value in them, usually moments between crew members or particular situations that are rather unique (not found in other episodes).

So, right now, I have to say that if I had one series to pick from the four (I don't really count TAS) Star Trek series, it would be TOS. Yeah, the special effects are often lame, but that's easily overlooked for the other production values. At least for me, anyway. And although Shatner has annoyed me in a number of episodes, he also did some great work. He's still my favorite captain (at one time I preferred Picard).

Anybody else feel similarly?

The way you phrased this, Gary, you make it sound as though you aren't really interested in hearing from people whose favorite Trek isn't TOS. Is that the case? I'm not criticizing it - I just don't want to drag your thread OT if that's all you're after.

TOS will always be number one for me. That's not to say I haven't enjoyed all the Trek incarnations to one degree or another.

Yup, favorite show was always Trek, ever since I was 4 back in 1971. Second all time fave is Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.

TOS is and always has been my favorite, though I also enjoy most of TNG and DS9. As for VGR and ENT, they're not favorites, but there are varying numbers of characters, episodes, etc. from each that I like. My biggest disappointment with ENT is the untapped potential of the series premise ("How it all began," etc.).

Well, that was the intent Kate, to see if those who say TOS is currently their favorite didn't always find it that way (didn't have it as a favorite before then it eventually became their favorite, or it was once, a different Star Trek series replaced it, but then they came back to TOS).

I've met a couple of people who started with TNG and then when they finally got around to seeing TOS, found TOS more enjoyable despite the special effects deficiencies.

For those who can't say TOS is their favorite, I would think this thread wouldn't interest them. If what you'd like to say takes a "hard left" on the topic, maybe another thread would be worthwhile? Otherwise, feel free to post here. :)
