If this is a success do you think it will be more socially..

...acceptable to talk about Trek in public than it used to be? And when I say that, I don't mean like where if you say you like Trek, then women will see that as an automatic turn on. I know Trek will NEVER get to that point, lol.

But rather, where you know how it's pretty socially acceptable to talk about Lord of the Rings in public because the movies were so successful and are held in such high regard by a great many people? Well, do you think if this movie is successful, then Trek fandom will reach that status?

Not that I care what other people think of Trek, of course. *puts my Star Trek pajamas on*

There have been successful Star Trek movies before. None of them had this effect.

This is true. But how many of those successful Trek movies tried to appeal to a mainstream audience more than this one is?

Re: If this is a success do you think it will be more social

Well, The Voyage Home appealed to many in the mainstream. That probably had a lot to do with its setting in modern times though.

As far as talking about Trek in public I do that now. When I was in high school I was kind of afraid to talk about it for fear of being labeled a nerd or something. As you get older you kind of stop caring what people think, at least about your tv viewing habits.

Me: "You going to see the new Trek movie when it comes out?"
Co-Worker: "I don't watch Star Wars, it's nerdy."
Me: "So what? You going to go?"
Co-Worker: "Probably."

(I think a lot of people are in the closet about liking sci-fi in general. It's just always been "kewl" to bash it.)

That, and it was more of a comedy that made fun of the Trek premise and trappings with a feel good, "save the whales" message tacked on it.

I definitely agree - its amazing how you get to know someone and suddenly something will slip out regarding the minutiae of 'Buffy' or 'Stargate', or they'll steal a joke from a show which you recognise and you find out they're a closet nerd after all :D

Re: If this is a success do you think it will be more social

I remembering reading "On the Good Ship Enterprise".

A reporter was yelling a Trekker: "Obsessing about a cancelled tv series is stupid!"

The Trekker replied: "Do you like football?"

The reporter nods: :Yesyesyes:

Trekker: "Do you know who won the World Series in 1977?"

The reporter spews stastics.

Trekker: "Obsessing about a baseball game from years ago is stupid!"

Reporter swears, and walks away.

Cinematographer: " I've never seen anyone tick him off."

No.

Anyway, this was not the result of Transformers. One's social circles may vary, but it would be fairly controversial to admit having liked this film.

If the movie is successful, it could be the topic of watercooler conversation for a while. But, it probably won't rival "Survivor" or "American Idol" on that venue.

After all, "Star Trek" is for intelligent audiences. ;) :)

Re: If this is a success do you think it will be more social

I hope not. I like Star Trek being a world for outsiders and iconoclasts. Learning to live with my "geek" status is part of what made me the man I am today.

Re: If this is a success do you think it will be more social

I think Star Trek is and will always be kind of nerd thing for majority of the people. However, there are lots of people (especially younger) who are not so familiar about ST and maybe they will give it a go. Perhaps Star Trek will be the next "trend thing" among them?

Re: If this is a success do you think it will be more social

Socially acceptable or not, I wont be talking about it in public. For me, Star Trek is a very personal thing.

I discuss it with a couple of my close friends, and although they are fans of trek and sci-fi in general - nothing comes close to my levels. Star Trek is my drug. Can't get enough of it.

I come in here to get my fix.

Lets face it, we don't have normal conversations in here. We have an entire thread devoted to the fucking corridors for crying out loud...

See, I'm luckier. I work in the tech industry...and around here more people know what's going on on Battlestar Galactica than on American Idol.

We actually have threads on the 'social' email distribution list that are entirely about Star Trek, gaming, and similar nerdy topics.

It's a regular nerd heaven here.

Re: If this is a success do you think it will be more social

First off, even though im new here and I dont mean to be arrogant, it seems like a lot of people here have this idea in their heads that there are tons of people who have never heard of star trek. that doesnt seem possible. now i know there are people who dont know **** about trek, tons of them, but its not like the vast majority of moviegoers who saw the trailer have no idea what the hell star trek is.

Star trek is still just as nerdy as ever...and so is lord of the rings...and thats because, like milhouse famously said to bart, "nerds are smart", and smart people come up with creative and cool things like star trek and lord of the rings, and all of the people who arent smart enough to get it will not suddenly have an epiphany no matter how much of a 21st century big budget makeover star trek gets

so the smart people will go see start trek, and the rest will go see some lameass vin diesel movie...the world will be the same after dec 25 2008, except we'll all know the answers to all the questions were asking now

Re: If this is a success do you think it will be more social

I doubt it and at this point in my life I could give a rip. Someone has a problem with me liking Trek over one of the hot reality shows that's their problem. I'm hooked on it and likely will be till the end.

It is funny though as someone mentioned hearing little jokes in various shows or movies with Trek. Things like Col. Mitchell from SG-1 saying to his twin from elsewhere: 'You don't have beards so you're not from the evil twin universe' were allways fun to see. I think there are many in the 'industry' that are closet Trek fans.

Re: If this is a success do you think it will be more social

If Star Trek is a success, that success will probably be limited to the film and its sequels.

Yes, Lord of the Rings was a phenomenal success, but the minute someone starts yammering on about the Silmarillion or the Unfinished Tales, other people start to back away. Same with Transformers once the discussion shifts away from the Michael Bay film onto G1 or Beast Wars or any of the other cartoon shows.

Re: If this is a success do you think it will be more social

thats true...the vast majority will probably see it because its the "big" movie (hopefully) of the season...

it will be sad to see trek become a fad and then pass for some people, but anyone who treats it that way is probably pretty shallow to begin with

Re: If this is a success do you think it will be more social

Oh, please, it's not a religion or a social cause, it's a movie.

Hopefully the "shallow" people Paramount wants this movie to draw will not think so negatively of you for not sharing their deep and abiding love of gardening, model railroading, quilting, car repair, etc., etc....
