"If only" Hollywood would do this...

Where are those Lensman movies we were promised?

And I'd like to write a proper VOY miniseries that would give the thing a better ending than the sudden stop we had. That's very pie in the sky, I know, but there y' go

-- A new, more faithful film adaption of Arthur C Clarke's 2010: Odyssey Two, followed by a film adaption of 2061: Odyssey Three.
-- For that matter, a film version of "Rendezvous With Rama".
-- A TV series set after the events of Mad Max 2, all about how the Great Northern Tribe first settled the north coast of post-apocalyptic Australia.

- Lovecraft stories done right. Guillermo Del Toro wanted to make an adaptation of At The Mountains Of Madness, but the studio withdrew its support at the last possible minute.
Call Of Cthulhu, Color Out Of Space, Whisperer In The Darkness, Shadow Out Of Time, Shadow Over Innsmouth could all make a great horror movies.

- A faithful adaptation of Hyperion Cantos. The rumours about it start to float every few years, but there's nothing definite so far.

-- For that matter, a film version of "Rendezvous With Rama".

I'd really like to see that one day.

Also a Movie version of "The Accidental Time Machine".

Both books are rather simple stories and I don't think they'd be too hard to do scene for scene.

I'd like to see a Honor Harrington movie with all the tactical complexity and well thought out in-universe technology from the books.

I doubt it would be an entertaining movie with all that exposition, but hey, I can dream.

Here's my top 5 'wish-list' projects, in no particular order:
* A sequel to Super Mario Bros.
* A sequel to Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
* A sequel to The Golden Compass
* A re-made/re-imagined version of Babylon 5
* A revival of Firefly

To quote the thread title, if only Hollywood would do this.
It feels like the vast majority of movies released these days are just lazy "reboots".

You make it sound like remakes and adaptations are a new thing. Movies have been doing that since day one.

True, but it was nowhere near as prevalent as it is now. I don't have a problem with remakes, but now it seems like Hollywood is just milking big franchise names as a safe bet, instead of relying on creativity and originality to create new franchises.

In 1922, there were at least three different versions of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Lon Chaney remade his own film, The Unholy Three, just a few years later. There were at least seven silent "Oz" movies. The Mummy's Ghost and The Mummy's Curse were released only months apart in 1944.

This is nothing new.

I never said it was anything new.
(On a side note, typically I wouldn't count old book adaptations such as Dr Jekyll, since they're often different adaptations of the same book, and often use newer technology to create a superior adaptation of a book, although that doesn't explain the lackluster and pointless 1941 version of Dr Jekyll, as it pales in comparison to the '31 version).

I'm talking about the recent increased trend of rebooting or recycling old movie and tv franchises. We have movies like Indiana Jones, Rocky, Rambo, Tron, etc dug up for long past sequels like never before. Then we have remakes/reboots of pretty much everything, and movie remakes of tv shows and cartoons. Heck, I just went to the first movie site I found on Google, and found out they're releasing a CGI Smurfs movie. Add that to the list of GI Joe, Transformers, Chipmunks, Yogi Bear, and countless others from the past couple of years.

Yes, you and I could easily name a lot of similar remakes happening all throughout cinematic history, so I'm certainly not claiming any of this is new. In the 90s we had movie versions of The Brady Bunch, The Flintstones, The Addams Family, and Batman got pretty much rebooted every time they got a new actor anyway. The trend has been on the rise for a long time.

But the past 5-10 years, it's been in overdrive. You can't go a week without hearing of a new remake or 20 year gap sequel. This used to happen a couple of times a year. Now it feels like it's a constant stream of churning out remakes. It's not like I'm the only person noticing.

There should be a rule 35. For everything you can think of, it's being rebooted

Blade III, directed by Del Toro.
Die Hard 4, directed by McTiernan or Harlin.
True Lies 2
The Expendables 2, with Schwarzenegger in a leading role alongside Stallone.

Oh, and Terminator 4, directed by James Cameron. With Christian Bale as John Connor, and Arnold Schwarzenegger as old HUMAN bad ass Marine who survived Judgment Day and now fights in the Resistance. And it ends with them destroying the time travel device, and the final scene is the beginning of Terminator 1, with the garbage truck, but this time, no Terminator arrives.

an adaptation of my Dave Danger anthology, please. with the American baiting first story complete and intact. America gets its ass whupped by aliens and the rest of the world has to save it...

Since Hollywood includes TV, my first wish is that Star Trek be back on TV.

My second wish is that any space opera series of any sort whatsoever be back on TV.

As for movies, eh. How about Rendezvous With Rama? Also, somebody greenlight At the Mountains of Madness! Someday I'd like to see someone give the Conan stories a sweeping, awe-inspiring treatment that befits the creation of a whole alternate universe, a la LOTR. I doubt the upcoming movie will be that thing. Any adaptation of Philip K. Dick is always interesting to me. In the comics realm, I'd like to see: Dr. Strange, Sub-Mariner and Warlock (fat chance on that last one).

They don't need to explain the tactics, just show them. People who have read the books will know what they're seeing. Everyone else just wants to watch things go boom. They might be a bit confused why the spaceships are not within visual range of one another, but as long as the action is thrilling, I doubt they'd care too much. Depending on how the battle scenes are edited, that part of it might not even be obvious.

- Lovecraft stories done right. Guillermo Del Toro wanted to make an adaptation of At The Mountains Of Madness, but the studio withdrew its support at the last possible minute.

I'm still inconsolable about this. Ass-hats!

Yeah, we had a shot at what may have been the first truly great Lovecraft film and it's shot down. Shoddy work, Hollywood. And he was even going to be smart enough to make it R rated, too...

I'd like to see Duncan Jones get to make whatever original SF films he wants to, for however much he wants to make them. Projects like Mute excite me a great deal, and I'm worried that he'll never get to make them in today's Hollywood climate.

I'd also be happy if Hollywood started adapting more PK Dick stories with more fidelity than they have been in the past (As much as I like Blade Runner, I'm thinking of more films like A Scanner Darkly).

Finally, there have hardly been any Arthur C. Clarke adaptations, despite the author's output. I'd be happy to see that change.

I'd like to see a completely original, never before seen sci-fi series on TV that runs anywhere from four to eight years.

And, if I ever manage to get it sold, or finish writing the thing (damned rewrites, I keep thinking up stuff I like better), you guys will too.

Maybe.

Hopefully.

With any luck at all.

Cross your fingers and say a prayer for me. I'm working on it.

Funny, because just yesterday I thought to myself how I'm kinda sick of PK Dick adaptations.

Blade Runner, Total Recall, Next, Minority Report, Paycheck, Impostor, Screamers, A Scanner Darkly, Confessions d'un Barjo, The Adjustment Bureau...

I'd love a new Dr. Strange movie, too. And the Spectre, please?

Plus, I wouldn't complain if they remade The Incredible Shrinking Man, Hell House, or Somewhere in Time just so I can put out some new movie tie-in editions of the original novels! :)
