Well you always invent a reason why a promising officer like Shelby would be assigned DS9 anyway. Perhaps after the Borg she became obsessed with destroying them (cliche I know) and fell out of favour with Starfleet.

I want to think in Pale Moonlight Garak's was red. And I suppose red appears black in some lighting conditions as well.

I vote for Kes. After all, if memory serves, she's three years old. Honestly, anyone but Sisko. I enjoyed Deep Space 9, but I watched it in spite of Sisko. The best episodes were the ones in which he had the least screen time.

Seriously, I think Julian Bashir would have made a great captain. What do you think?

That would have been quite interesting. A bitter Riker would be Quark's, and Dukat's, worst nightmare! Of course, Riker's revenge would be when DSN becomes one of the most important postings in Starfleet because of the wormhole. One of his nemeses could be a Starfleet admiral who has a thing against Riker, and they could clash on how he interprets orders from Starfleet Command. Kind of like Barney Miller clashing with that inspector. -- RR

I think the appeal of having what is basically a Space Nazi (Dukat was ALWAYS portrayed like this, no matter what his fans say...) as a protagonist would be interesting for a while, but not as a series-long idea.

Well, they did have a multiple-ep arc in the beginning of the sixth season where Dukat was in charge of the station and heading up the Dominion occupation. Very interesting dynamic with Kira having to work with someone she really hated. And it was great to see Weyoun slinking around the station. But I agree that as a permanent move, it wouldn't work.

As a writing exercise, and something I once posted, I came up with alternate versions of the characters in different roles, and in one instance, I envisioned O'Brien as commander of Deep Space Nine and becoming the Emissary.

It's the grimdark obsession people have these days. They seem incapable of comprehending that NOT having everything be miserable and hopeless means it's a worthless story and that happy endings no longer have a place in any media whatsoever.

Yes, it is impossible and stupid to have characters who are actually moral people who stay true to their beliefs and manage to find better ways than compromising themselves in order to do things (I am also being sarcastic).
