If Not Ezri...

Arpy

Vice Admiral
Admiral
...then who'd you have added that last season?

Or how would you have done the character differently?

(And come to think of it, who was DS9's science officer that last year, and who was their counselor the previous 6?)

I really liked Ezri. However, it would have been nice to have either a male Dax, or no Dax at all. Thing is, a whole new character with NO link whatsoever would have asked for even more backstory than Ezri got, and some people allready think she got too much attention in season 7. A male Dax would have really made things interesting for some of our characters, but also leave Kira as the single female character, and I think that would have also not gone over well.

I think Ezri was used too much, because I think the writers latched onto the new character as she was an easier source for stories at that point of the show. Whilst I can't help but think the addition of Cretak, or another similar female Romulan, would have been interesting, they may have done the same thing?

Anyway, I think we never really had much of a Romulan voice after they joined the alliance, so that would have been good to delve into in the last year. Perhaps going to that well more often would have saved us from Prodigal Daughter and Field of Fire.

Ezri could definitely have been a guest character, and I always figured things would have been turned on their heads if she had been a man.

I liked Ezri. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I thought you were suggesting Neelix then. That would have been different, having the Voyager crew get home early in time to help with the war. They're so fed up of Neelix the transfer paperwork is pushed through pretty fast. :D

Ezri was definitely likeable but I think she was just used too much, so I always get fed up with her at some point on rewatches.

I'm not a writer (paging @Dennis :p), but in a way I would imagine it's sort of natural that a new major character - introduced after six seasons - would get a lot of screentime. They sort of had to play catch-up.

Aside from their good scenes in It's Only a Paper Moon, I think we had just enough of Rom and Leeta. ;)

Now I think about it logically though, DS9's cast had a lot of supporting stars, so yes, the focus could have been split across them, and then they would pop up more frequently.

Sisko's comments when asking her to stay on, suggested there wasn't one.

And they may have held off taking on a science officer as one of the senior staff as there was a war going on... Kira probably had Starfleet and even the Bajoran Milita send up a science officer with some kind of senority after Sisko went away.

Precisely. The Monday morning quarterbacking is absurd. Any new character, even a male Dax, would have required background stories and episodes to flesh out the character. I would not have preferred a return of Dax as a main character, but at least (1) the actress was good and (2) we actually got some halfway decent Trill stories after they had been shelved for several seasons.

That said, it would have been better to elevate a recurring character, either Garak or Kassidy Yates, or both. ISB had wanted to make Andrew Robinson part of the main cast, and by Season 7, Garak seemed more firmly on the side of our heroes (albeit with his cynical outlook). Penny Johnson has proven to be a strong actress who can handle regular appearances, and I think that the relationship between Sisko and Yates could have been more thoroughly fleshed out. Indeed, Yates, as someone who worked for the Bajoran government, would have helped expand the politics of the final episodes.

Arjin, now a Starfleet conn officer, who is forced to joined with Dax. Or made more of Kasidy. Or brought back T'Rul as the Romulan Liaison. Or Melora as the new science officer.

However I too liked Ezri. She had a nice little arc for a single series and wasn't overused like Seven was.

A cute kid or lovable robot.

Dear Paramount,

Please accept my application for executive producer. As you can see from the above internet post I am totally qualified. I already have my own suit, lack of imagination, and fanatical devotion to corporate politics. I am related to a member of the board, distantly of course, but I can assure they hold me in the highest esteem. Your promotion is assured by hiring me. If you are needing my qualificcations, I printed out an MBA last night on my computer.

Sincerely,

M.T. Suit

Sela as the Romulan representative on DS9. The idea being a half human would get on better with the Feds. But lots of tension between her and Worf (who knew her mother...well kinda).

Heck, you could draw in the delinquent Ishara Yar to met her delinquent niece and then it would all kick off.
