If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or not?

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

Well, Star Trek WAS his sandbox, and we're all just playing in it. He can do whatever he wants.

I actually don't care that GR changed things when he had the cash to do so, so I'm not going to complain when a new producer charged with making Star Trek a worthwhile investment for Paramount does so. Its fiction after all and like it or not its Paramounts to do with as they please.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

Both? Hell why not make it totally fit into canon and have some half way between one and the other.

I will say if they go with ridges I'd rather the ones seen in Deep Space Nine. I disliked the "receding hairline" look of the original movies.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

I don't really care if they have ridges or not. I just want to see a return to the more cunning and militaristic Klingons of TOS instead of those tiresome Native American Klingons who never stop talking about their damn honor.

Sing it, brother!

If there were ruffles in the abramsverse, would klingons want ridges?

Ow! That hurt my brain! :wtf:

Seriously, I'd like the Klingons to come with and without ridges. After a few centuries, the ridgeless type might breed out. If ridges are a dominant-gene thing, about a quarter of Klingons might be ridgeless by the 23d century. I don't care as long as you actually have to work at it to outsmart your Klingon opponent.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

I'm going to be an unruly quick-poster for a moment and not bother reading any replies, because this thread has gone on for quite some time. I'll just say yes, yes to the ridges.

Make them a little less stylized than they were in, say, DS9 and you've got a midway point that will suit any scrutinizing Trekkie who actually stops and thinks about it for a moment: they're on their way back to the whole shebang.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

Either. As long as they keep the gold sashes. And pocket watches. With gold chains. Paisley vests would be nice, too. :wtf:

Heck, I think the alien from "Predator" would make a great Klingon.

Indeed. The looked like they were wearing ridged bathing caps with hair hanging off the back in TMP.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

Make all Klingons with ridges. Have some of the Klingons with less pronounced ridges to represent the Klingons that suffered from the augment virus, but make them look like the rest. Maybe include several short-haired Klingons to represent the short hair they had in TOS. But otherwise, don't use the TOS look or the augments arc as an excuse to ruin their look. Assume that TOS didn't depict the Klingons as they actually looked, and that ENT exaggerated the loss of ridges.

Well to give a visual aid (thanks to STO) this is what they looked like on TOS

Now this on the other hand is what a rigged Klingon in a TOS era uniform looks like

I personal think Abrams should go with the second pic.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

This sis too easy...i would use the same technology they used on Avatar. The klingons would be 8-10 feet tall and brawny. The ridges would remain, but more pronounced like battering rams. They would be more savage like pit-bulls forced to fight. They would be more dishelved. I love the klingons, but always imagined them more massivethan a human, and can take a pounding and then some.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

I don't think I care one way or the other. I thought is was silly for enterprise to come up with some elaborate reason for the lack of ridges. It was just makeup and makeup got better.

It was just make-up until the DS9 episode where Worf and some other characters went back in time to the TOS period and appeared in the events originally portrayed in the "Trouble With Tribbles." Then they had original TOS make-up Klingons on-screen at the same time as Worf (in disguise to hide his ridges). Even if the characters hadn't brought the question up in that episode's dialogue, from that point on it still would have begged the question for the fans. It was better to at least acknowledge it because it would have been stupid for the other 24th century characters to see but not question the difference between Worf and the more humanlike Klingons.

And if they had CGed ridges on to the TOS Klingons then the producers would had heard a lot of screaming from the diehard TOS fans that DS9 desicrated the memory of the TOS Klingons, so that was not an option. And if you think they just never should have had an episode that begged the question, then blame DS9, not Enterprise. But I don't because I really like the DS9 episode. In fact it's my favorite from that entire series. Genius time travel story / tribute to the TOS. If you haven't seen it, I recommend you do and then decide how silly it really was for ENT to finally provide an in-universe explanation for the different make-up. And one that cleverly incorporated all of the speculation in that DS episode to boot.

But in DS9 it was hilarious. That makes it okay.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

I'm still rather fond of the suggestion someone here made years ago that Worf just shouldn't have had ridges in the TOS footage, and have none of the other characters notice.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

I don't think it's a question of if...

To me it's obvious that Abramsverse isn't mainly for fans that have been following the ever growing Star Trek world, it's for Normal People who'll watch it simply because of the familiar name, just like they all went to see Mission Impossible and Transformers even though they never saw the originals.

And since Normal People basically know 4 things about Star Trek: Kirk, Spock, Enterprise, Klingons -- and expect Klingons to have ridges -- it's inevitable that Klingons will appear in the sequels (as one-dimensional Bad Guys, no doubt), and they'll be ridged.

If people are channeling TOS era Klingons, then they'll expect no ridges.

If the JJ movies were about Picard, Data, Enterprise Dee and Klingons, then they'd be expecting ridges.

JJ Klingons should be "swarthy," dark (little greasy) hair, short beards and some variation on the pre-TMP costumes.

Lose the half assed armor, can anyone name once any of it actual worked?

:)

Most people don't even know that the Klingons used to look like the bad guys in a Sinbad movie. Those who do know get a laugh out of it.

Pretty much this. When you see Star Trek being referred to, parodied or taken the piss out of, you don't tend to see Klingons depicted as ridgeless.
