If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or not?

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

As if blowing up Vulcan and redesigning everything didn't already invalidate our established facts?

He can do whatever the hell he feels like, he already did for Pete's sake. So just pull out the same "alternate-universe = carte blanche" mentality everyone loves so much.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

In the TOS, Romulans were originally intended to be the big arch-nemesis of the Federation but giving them the ears was too expensive so they created a lower-budget race. They were never happy with that, and after TMP, Roddenberry's explanation for the changes at the time was that it was merely a retcon... "Just pretend they always had the ridges in TOS". In light of Worf going back in time to the TOS in DS9, they had to mention the issue but didn't canonize an actual in-universe solution until the end of Enterprise, thus also explaining why the Klingons had the ridges earlier in the series until the end.

They intentionally didn't use Klingons as the villains in the new Trek, and the deleted scene had them wear helmets so as to not reveal what was underneath. Even if they were ridgeless Klingons, it made sense for them to have helmets with the ridges to help them accept their loss of racial pride and identity that many Klingons undoubtedly felt because of the Augment Virus making them more human-like.

They should have the ridges in the new Trek.

They could just explain the Klingons learned a lot from having the Nerada for 25 years and one of the things they learned from the medical databanks was a way to end the Augment Virus plague before it had completely run its course.

My point is, the franchise waited until the end of Enterprise because it is really lame for Klingons to not have the ridges, thus the ridgeless Klingons only existed from 2154 to about 2270. Now they have the budget for them, so it is better to just make up an explaination and put the ridges back in the new timeline...

...If there needs to be Klingons at all. They could also just create original stories with more original characters and not show the Klingons in the new Star Trek. Then it's a non-issue.

The klingon quest for a cure to the virus could also be a plot point for the next movie...

I would be very surprised if the augment virus became a main point, or was even mentioned, in one of the upcoming movies. The portion of the audience that remembers anything at all about Star Trek: Enterprise is just too small.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

If Klingons show up in future movies, I don't think we need to explain the whole ridges vs. no ridges thing. It's already been explained in ENT, and we can always say in background info that the disease wore off and the ridges came back. No need for tiresome explanations, my friends!

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

Although I think it'd be a cool throwback to TOS if the Klingons didn't have ridges, a lot of Trek newbs wouldn't realize that the Klingons originally didn't have ridges. However, there will always be the army of fanboys who can justify anything with great heaping shovelfuls of Trek lit, and thus there's no way to really win.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

I think it would be awesome to see ridges. I just think it looks cooler...and hey...I guess either way it doesn't matter. Since the time line got messed up I think that J.J. can do whatever. But not too much whatever. Well u know what I mean.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

I'd like to see both varieties of Klingons. Both kinds exist so show 'em both.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

I'm for ridges. In 3-D

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

If Kor shows up in the Abramsverse, I hope he’s played by James Callis.

That's what I would've said too. It seems to be the path the Enterprise relaunch novels have taken, so why not give a little nod to the fans in the know?

On the other hand, the last film was designed primarily for people who were new the franchise, so it'd probably confuse them. And Klingons are much better known to the average Joe as having the Cornish pasty heads. So if a mix is considered too confusing for the average viewer, then it's ridges all the way.

That would be all sorts of awesome casting!
I'm for some kind of modified ridges, something not so in your face that suggests the Mongolian look of the originals. They didn't exactly pull it off very well in ENT - part of it was the uniforms, they should have placed the ridgeless ones in old style uniforms.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

It's insane to want Klingons who don't look like Mongolians on Halloween?
But that's what they look like : /

If it had been a full on reboot (which it should've been) then they could do whatever they wanted with them, but to suggest that the Kelvin blowing up would somehow affect millions of years of Klingon evolution is mental.

But, y'know, whatever, let them do whatever they want.

But it ok that GR himself up and had the look changed without bothering to explain it...

For that reason alone they can and should do anything they like.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

I guess it's not Abramsverse canon since the scene was cut, but the cut sequence of Nero getting captured by the Klingons showed guards wearing helmets with ridges on them, indicating that they were designed to fit ridged Klingons.

Maybe the helmets were used by aug/Kilngons closer to the empire to disguise their smooth foreheads? Just like if there were some sort of genetic malady that caused humans' noses to deform, leaving them with only nostrils, they would wear either a decorative or realistic prosthesis to hide it-- or just cover the area completely.

I think it would be best either for the ridged klingons to be in charge, with smoothies as their underlings, or vice versa-- I could totally see the smooth heads running the empire for a time.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

I'm getting a bit tired of aliens with brow/head ridges. What purpose do they serve? Are they like eyebrows? .. to keep rain water out of your eyes?

Let's have some "real" aliens for a change. Six legged insectoids or whatever.

Enough with humans with silly putty stuck on their noggins!

Well, Star Trek WAS his sandbox, and we're all just playing in it. He can do whatever he wants.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

If the Klingons show up in movies in the new timeline, would you want them to look like the smooth-foreheaded Klingons of TOS or the bumpy-headed ones of latter movies and series? I vote bumpy.

Incidentally, I've heard that Enterprise explained the discrepancy, but I never got around to watching much of that series so I don't know what the explanation is.

For me it would only make sense to keep them like the TOS series with smooth heads, since it seemed as though the Romulans went back to smooth heads and pointy ears in the movie.

Though a good story to add to a future movie of the New Kirk era would be one that focuses on the Klingons transitioning back to their ridged looks.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

I want the Klingon's left alone. I don't care if they have ridges (I personally accept the HemQuch/QuchHa explanation from ENT and the Palaisverse novels) but they need to keep what makes them Klingon. If they take away Kahless and the laws of honor and that martial culture, they just become a bunch of assholes doing whatever they want, no different from your run of the mill science fiction space pirates.

Re: If Klingons show up in Abramsverse films would you want ridges or

well, they seem to get the klingons right. the klingons in the deleted scenes were basically the same klingons characterwise we know and love. we just happen to don't know if they have forehead disformities, because in jjverse the hide their faces under helmets...

Well, for some TOS purists, Kahless, honor and martial culture are - just like the ridges - an insult that should be forgotten about. ;)
