If Kirk can be so easily recast..

I think the actor playing Kirk is going to have a much harder time than the actor playing Spock. There's more nuisance to Kirk than Spock. What I mean is, if the actor plays Kirk as deadly serious then it's just not going to be Kirk. If the actor plays Kirk exactly like William Shatner, it will come across as a parody. The actor playing Kirk will have to play him with some Shatnerisms but must avoid falling into the bad parody category.

Now that you mention it, we never did see Nogura, and I can't recall any dialogue referring to the admiral as "he" or "him"...

P.S., somebody tell the $#@&ing spellchecker I'm spelling "dialogue" correctly.

To be fair, they never had to recast any main roles before. I think the closest they've had was Saavik, but she doesn't really count, since she wasn't from the television show. With both the TOS and TNG movies, the central cast was already set.

I think it's a wise decision to make sure that the casting is correct, especially since we fans are very picky. If this movie does take off, and Paramount decides to run with a television show, I think it would be wise to make sure that these characters work well together. They may end up being the cast of that show.

Well, I'm going to be a bit of a nit-picker here. It's true that, up till now, they've never had to recast the TOS characters, and Saavik doesn't quite count. But with DSN, they did recast part of one character -- Dax. Of course, that part was the symbiont, placed in the host body of Ezri. Doing my best to gum up the works!

As for the o.p., I also don't recall anyone saying it would be easy to recast Kirk, esp. since he's such an iconic character. IMO, they need to pick someone who has that fun glint in his eye that Shatner has, yet not be a parody of Shatner. That's a tall order.

Don't know if anyone has ever mentioned this actor in the role, but I kind of like the idea of Guy Pearce playing Captain Kirk.

Cute. As I remember, in the novelization of TMP, Nogura is male. Given name, Heihachiro, if memory serves. I know, it's not canon, but that's how I choose to think of the formidable Admiral. Still, that would be interesting to establish Nogura as a woman. -- RR
