If it wasn't a prequel...

....then what?

It's often said DS9 and Voyager were not popular enough to make movies out of (and since Voyagers back home not much to do with it anyway)

it occurs to me there isn't a huge amount of backstory to tell about Kirk and TOS but I can't think of any other era that should be explored?

The dominion would have made a great premise for a movie but now that the war is over thats out.

What else could they have done?
Could they do another movie with the ENT-E? Without Data, Troi and Riker?
or one with the Titan? (big risk with so many new people and a new ship)

It would have to be a movie with the TNG crew on 2 ships if it's not this. Voyager and DS9 didn't get the ratings that TNG and TOS got. Those 2 are the crews with the more familiar characters.

Prequels suck.

I prefer flashbacks.

What's the difference? If "The Phantom Menace" has five minutes of Obi-Wan's ghost telling the story of Anakin to some one in the beginning or end, would it have made the movie less of a stinker?

I would prefer an all-new cast, perhaps on a Nebula- or Akira-class or new starship. The Trek novels have a wealth of ideas and material to use or inspire new ideas.

It's not the way the business works, but I would like a new movie serve as the pilot for a new series, with fairly unknown actors signed on to do the movie and become regulars in the series with that understanding so as to make it financially feasible. With Paramount in charge of the movies and CBS in charge of TV Trek, whatever chance there might have been to do that is toast.

What it looks like we'll be getting instead, for better or worse, is a series of TOS-era movies, no new TV series, various fan flims, and a wealth of Trek novels.

:(

What about a New Frontier movie?
I like Calhoun as a character but the missions they were on and the region they were in were a bit dull (from what I read so far)

I think a totally new crew would be too big a risk for the suits at the studios to take.

a TNG would be without key cast members so would also be a risk.

I suppose it's a prequal or nothing :(

Bev Crusher and the adventures of the medical ship Pasteur.

Anyone?
Star Trek: Plague of the Week
"These are the voyages of the PlagueShip Pasteur. It's .5 year mission: to seek out new viral infections and vaccines. To boldly go where no proctologist has gone before."
Yeah, I can see that show lasting all of two episodes... and being a pain in the a$$. :vulcan:

^ I don't know, it might work. Medical shows still seem pretty popular on tv. Does anybody still watch ER?

What they should have done, or more correctly should do is a movie with characters from TNG, DS9 and Voyager.

Together, those three shows hve a lot of fans and therefore a movie with characters from those series would have a chance to attract most of those fans.

At the same time, they could introduce a new crew which would be the main characters in an upcoming series, a series where some of the old favorites from TNG , DS9 and Voyager would show up from time to time.

What the movie and series would be about? A lot of possibilities here. OK, the Borg plot mah have run its course but there are other species which could provide some threat. Species 8472, the Kelvans, Cardassians out for revenge, the Dominion or something totally new.

As for the upcoming movie, I have my doubts about it.

Most of the TOS fans will not accept other actors than Shatner, Nemoy and the other "legends" for portraying their old favorites and most fans of the other shows seems uninterested. I guess that most of the fans (including me) will watch it only because it's Star Trek.

TOS was a wonderful series with some of the best characters ever created. But let it rest in peace and let us remember it as it was. The new movie looks like just a desperate attempt to milk the last possible profit out of TOS.

But it's technically not a prequel if it's framed in the premise of 24th- or 24th-century Spock traveling back in time to the pre-TOS era (or some Bizarro alternate thereof in which the Enterprise looks like that in the teaser, etc.) to undo a villain's meddling.

...or TNG or DS9 or Voyager. Think about it. Your idea is the same as the idea you seem to hate. A re-hash of a show that has already been done.
:vulcan: That is not logical. :vulcan:
To paraphrase... Damn the canon, full speed ahead... with the new movie. I'm excited about seeing it.

I'd like to see a Star Trek medical show; it would have some nice dramatic plot possibilities:

An alien carrying a contagious disease crashes on an uncontacted planet, and the crew of the Pasteur has to treat a plague while either keeping their presence a secret or handling a first contact, and the crew is split on which to do.

The Pasteur is sent to treat the wounded in a war between two alien species, and the crew has to deal with groups of mutually hostile patients.

A plague turns out to be caused by sentient microbes, and the crew tries for a peaceful solution while the planetary authorities just want the microbes wiped out.
