If a newly merged CBS/Viacom is sold to a third party, who should be Star Trek's new owners?

Amazon might - Jeff Bezos is a Trekkie, I could see him wanting to own the franchise.

Except Bezos being a fan of Trek doesn't mean he is going to spend a ton money buying Star Trek. Viacom/CBS is worth more as a whole, then any one franchise is, including Star Trek.

Bezos has more than enough money to buy the whole enchilada even if he's only interested in Trek. Same deal with Apple. As for Netflix, it's running up Tesla-grade debt. I would not want CBS/Viacom to go into the maw of a company that might burst like Enron from overspending.

Agreed with those who think we should buy Star Trek. If we, the members of the TrekBBS, all smash our piggybanks in unison, would we have enough to buy CBS-Viacom?

Yeah, I am worried that Netflix may be overleveraged and could be in trouble when big players like Disney and Warner Bros take their stuff off Netflix and set up rival streaming services.

Whether Apple or Amazon could buy Star Trek from CBS, does not mean they will, they wouldn't do a million/billion dollar on a whim, they would do as part of a business plan. Everything from Viacom/CBS would provide more content for their streaming services then just Star Trek on its own, not Star Trek wouldn't be a fairly big property to have, but having all the content from CBS/Viacom is better for their streaming services, then just Star Trek itself will be. Really Star Trek's fate is tied to the rest of the Viacom/CBS media library.

Doesn't Disney own ABC and FOX (after the 20th Century Fox acquisition)?

The sale included a majority of the entertainment subsidiaries under the 21st Century Fox umbrella - 20th Century Fox Film, 20th Century Fox Television, Fox Searchlight, Fox 2000 Pictures (which Disney is now dissolving), the FX Networks, Fox 21 Television, Fox's 30% portion of Hulu, etc.

It did NOT include the Fox Broadcasting Network, Fox News and Fox Sports - those were reorganized under a new name, "Fox Corporation".

Disney is still using the Fox brand for their acquired assets because there's equity in the name. And because confusing people is fun.

Comcast/NBCUniversal would be a nice balance with Disney.
Since the FCC allows one broadcast network per customer, how exactly would that work? Comcast only recently acquired NBC/Universal, so what would they divest in order to own CBS?

i see I dont know how it works. lol

And Disney now owns ABC and FOX don't they?

I like Netflix & Amazon for this but also HBO owning Trek would be really interesting. HBO has some great shows that stretch boundaries, it would be fascinating to see what they could do with Trek.

HBO is now owned by AT&T. AT&T has a lot of debt, so I don't think they can afford to buy CBS/Viacom. Apple has tons of cash and can do it.

Out of curiosity, how does CBS get away with owning CBS and half of The CW?

This came up when Viacom which owned UPN bought CBS. They threatened to shut down UPN if FCC didn't approve. So FCC decided to relax their rules, saying that no company could own 2 of the major broadcast networks (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX) but they could own one of the major networks and one of the smaller ones (UPN, WB). I think CW is still not considered one of the major networks.

If Star Trek is sold to a Third Party, the owner should be Jill Stein not Gary Johnson.

ba-dum-bum

Me. I should be the new owner.

  1. Get Jeff Bezos to adopt me and make me his sole heir (never mind that I’m only 3 years younger than him).
  2. Get him to “accidentally” fall out of a helicopter.
  3. ???
  4. Profit/inherit.
  5. Buy Trek

Easy peasy.
