IE6 or IE7?

Now I want responses for Internet Explorer, and not everyone going off and saying Firefox is superior (because I do have it installed.)

But recently I had to reset my PC to factory settings and so far I decided to keep Internet Explorer 6 rather then have 7 installed. (my PC is around 4-5 years old :)). My question is, from your experience, is IE6 better then IE7 or should I stick with IE7?

A while back ago I was warned of a possible security hole with IE7 dealing with passwords & usernames. Does IE6 have the same issues or maybe not as many because it is older?

Thanks :)

You'd have to think any known holes, security or otherwise, would have been covered by a patch by now.

That sounds pretty silly when I read it back.

IE6 may have problems with some newer websites, especially those that have PNG images that have transparencies in them (they show as white vs. transparnt) there are ie6 javascript work arounds but still..

Isn't IE8 still in it's BETA stage? I thought it was last I checked. I tried it out in its earlier stages, I didn't care for it much. It might be better now though, so who knows. So far with the sites I usually visit I haven't had a problem with IE6. The only problem I seemed to have with IE7 was it remembering my usernames and passwords. Back in the day it worked like a charm, and lately it hasn't, so I decided to stick with IE6. I may give IE8 a try if they are finished with the Beta.

Go with IE7. If you have downloaded the latest Microsoft security patches, then then the issue you raised with IE7 should no longer be an issue. As a matter of fact, if you have reset your PC to factory settings, then doing all the Microsoft updates has to priority numero uno otherwise you are very vulnerable.

The advantage of IE7 is that it fixed a lot of display bugs that affected IE6 sites (IE7 still has a lot of bugs though). Also, MS will soon drop support for IE6 in their security updates and once that happens you would be exposed.

If you are feeling adventures you can download IE8 which is the future anyways. A small percentage of websites won't look correct because web designers haven't accommodated all the changes IE8 has done to the way it interprets html/css but this shouldn't be a big problem. Here is the download: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/Internet-explorer/beta/default.aspx

It's a Beta but fully functional at this point.

And to account for the few pages that don't look right it has a "Compatability View" button that's handy.

I've been using it for months and love it.

Ok, that's what I was wondering. I downloaded IE8 like a long time ago and it wasn't fully functional yet. I may give it a try.

I just downloaded and installed IE8. A lot different then it's initial BETA stages! I like it so far. Thanks for the tidbit :)
