Idris Elba role revealed!

If I can be serious for a minute [/Lance Storm*], maybe they're redoing "Omega Glory"? Crashed Federation ship, Elba's the Captain Tracy-alike who's set up as God of the locals and Kirk and company have to make it right.

*It's okay if you don't get that reference.
If it were in the style of Heart of Darkness/Apacalypse Now, set in the Trek universe, that could be pretty awesome.

That' s one lame story

I'd rather not.

The last time Trek took a stab at Joe Conrad it ended ... badly.

If you are referring to Insurrection, then, yeah, that didn't turn out so hot.

Again a mesh of ideas like its predecessor, what would eventually become Star Trek: Insurrection, says Piller, emerged from his own experience with aging. "I literally got the idea for this film one morning as I was putting on my Rogaine...Not that I need it of course." Piller seized upon the prevailing attitudes and focus of American society on youth, deciding to craft a story based on the search for the Fountain of Youth. Rick Berman meanwhile hoped to remake a classic story into a Star Trek film. The collaborators utilized Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and the concept of traveling "up river" to form their outline.

Second movie in a row where the villain (or at least one of them) is rogue Starfleet though.

(not saying it's a bad idea)

That works for an episode. I can't see how they'd do a feature length movie all on one planet though. Especially with a title like Beyond.

Something important obviously happens there because they're going to the expense of making a huge set piece. That said, for all we know, it may be the only major scene set on that planet or any other planet.

Could be a lot of it is in space. It's possible we could have a classic case of someone trying to take over the Enterprise. This time, Elba. Just to throw in another idea from way out in left field.

Maybe the Enterprise crashes and Young Kirk gets future Kirk to help him defeat Sauron.

Although, Insurrection was originally written as a darker film and was re-written to be more light hearted and comedic.

Sorry you think so!

I see you are from Brazil! I taught first grade for many years, and our Social Science focus was Brazil. I loved learning about your wonderful country, and hope to visit it someday soon! :techman:

Remind me again. Was it Insurrection or Nemesis where Picard was salsa dancing?

 ...sort of related; I just saw the first episode of "Blunt Talk"! He is so good, and after watching it, I said to myself that there was No Way he would ever be able to play Captain Picard again...

...well, maybe like in "Mirror, Mirror" or "The Enemy Within".

News about Elba's villain role:

He's going to have that tested by the film's villain, Idris Elba as Kraal (spelling is my own!). Kraal has a philosophy that seems to be rooted in questions Lin has had about Trek since he watched the show as a kid, and that philosophy informs the character in a big way.
Justin Lin said:
It’s about building him and having a philosophy and a point of view. I really like his character because he’s challenging the Federation’s philosophy, and it’s something growing up I wanted to see. He’s a character that has a distinct philosophy. Sometimes I watch Trek and I see utopia in San Francisco, and you think “They don’t have money, so how do they live, how do they compete?” Those are things that his character, in a way, has a very distinct and valid point of view about.
When someone is really challenging a way of life, how the Federation should act, I can see - right or wrong - that this is a valid point of view, and that’s a point of entry.
(Kraal, by the way, is a member of a new species, not a Klingon as his name might indicate)

KRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!

Short, kinda generic alien as far as Star Trek goes, and a pretty obvious bad guy name.

I love it.

Seriously. :techman:

Perfect for the over the top action adventure in the vein of TOS it's shaping up to be. Kinda sucks that Elba's going to be under heavy makeup. I'd rather he play a legitimate good guy really, but if he's a bad guy I do prefer that he's a more alien looking alien.

Walking back from the dentist today, I came up with a great story that fits the trailer. The planet they find is some type of time anomaly, where time flows at a different rate (hence Boutella's line "I know why you're all here"). Elba plays the captain of the USS Franklin, which crashed there 50 years ago and he's trying to keep it secret. He controls the Swarm army, promising them eternal life in exchange for their protection.

Then I realized that it sounded almost identical to Insurrection, and dropped the train of thought before it took form...

That being said, maybe he's Captain Steve Krall, great great great grandson of Diana Krall (Canadian musician).
