Actually, once Wesley Crusher left TNG, there were a slew of women manning the helm of the Enterprise-D, including Ro Laren...

Of course, Counselor Troi was the one who crashed the Enterprise into Veridian III, but I guess we'll let that one pass because it was after a major warp core breach...
