ICQ Destroyed by AOL

Hello all. Hopefully there is someone out there who knows what's going on. I've had an email account with ICQMail for years. Apparently, they've just been assimilated by AOL (aren't they dead yet?) They seem to have made some kind of half-assed attempt at merging the two mail systems online, but now neither my ICQMail email address nor my ICQ number will get me in. When I use the address I get "Invalid Screen Name or Password. Please try again." When I try the number I get "This site does not currently support ICQ users. Sign In with an AOL screen name." and <<BIG surprise>>, there doesn't seem to be any special instruction set available on the AOL site for legacy ICQ users, or at least none that I could find. What if I don't have one of their stupid AOL screen name accounts? I have plenty of other addresses but that one is fairly well used, not a primary but certainly not out of the game. Does anyone know how to get this to work? I've tried my entire career to stay away from all things AOL but it seems they have found me and done their damndest to screw things up. Help?? :(

AOL destroyed ICQ years ago. :(

I wish I had some insight into your problem. I never used "ICQMail". You might see if they have a support email you shoot a message to.

I have a tertiary ICQMail account that I occasionally use for signing up for things that might send me spam. I just logged into it just fine.....

Now I tried a different path and I got this error message:

Unsupported Account This site does not currently support ICQ users. Sign In with an AOL screen name.
Click Continue to Sign In with a screen name.

Are they completely leaving these legacy accounts in the dust?

You bust on AOL but you still use ICQ;)

Indeed. Might as well hook up a cup and string communication device. ;)

thought ICQ died about 10 years ago? At least, once AIM picked up steam in 98 or so, that was the beginning of the end. Most of my friends started using AIM, so got an account there to chat with them, and then I hit college, and never used ICQ again...

*shrug* There are those that say that AOL destroyed the internet, too.

Not too many of us remember that dark day when the floodagates were opened... well, perhaps a higher percentage here do than other sectors since we do have a high geek factor in this lovely forum. :)

Call AOL and raise bloody hell with them. Tell them that if they won't recognize you as an ICQ customer, then perhaps they don't need your business, and add that several of your friends have AOL, but will not any longer, after this conversation. Make them know they can possibly lose customers as a result of this hassle, and make it known you will give them bad word of mouth, if the issue is not corrected. That ought set them straight, since they see dollar signs before customer's smiles.
