Icheb... discuss!

Lucy of Nine

Commander
Red Shirt
I always thought he could have been so much more. I was never a fan of the actor who played him, I felt his acting was a bit stilted and stiff. It was a bit sad he wasn't in the last epsiode (from memory), and didnt seem to pop up to say goodbye to Neelix in his last Episode either.

Was he a result of bad storylines, or bad acting?

I thought the actor did a pretty great job with what he was given. The only problem I can think of: he came off on screen a bit older than what I think the writers were envisioning, so some of the material didn't feel right. But his performance went a fair ways toward evening that gap.

He was the best thing about the whole Borg children business...not that there was much of a horse race going on there.

I liked Icheb, he was my favorite reaccuring character.

His acting was meant to be stiff, all the Borg kids acted that way due to Borg brainwashing. I liked how he was a mentor to the Borg kids without coming off as a know it all. Plus, thanks to Icheb's virus, Adm. Janeway had a template to use to infect the Borg in "Endgame". He wasn't mature enough to act like a total adult but wasn't an annoying prick like Wesley either. Unlike Wesley, Icheb never over stepped his bounderies.

The episode where we meet Icheb's parents ("Child's Play") was one of the best; it was an episode based on a grey-area concept, a controversial idea. It was so interesting to watch what lengths beleaguered people would go to in order to protect themselves from and stand up to the Borg. They were valiant in their own, gruesome way. It wasn't an easy thing for them to do -- twice.

I think that Icheb was pretty much one dimensional. Writers didn'tgive him any depth.

He looked good in a few episodes but largely was part of the scenery in other episodes.

Just my opinin of course.

I liked Icheb, I always thought he was a cool character. Then again, I never hated Wesley like most people do....

I wasn't bothered by Icheb. For a supporting character, he served his purpose. A device to be used to forward the plot in the context of the lives of the major characters. I would have been much more upset if the writers had fleshed him out more - we already had 9 main characters which they struggled to flush out adequately.

Icheb was most definately in endgame. He beats Tuvok at a game of Kal-Toh, which is when Tuvok figures out his condition is getting worse, which ties into the earlier scenes of him being mentally incapacitated.

As for saying goodbye to Neelix, it was never established that Neelix and Icheb had much of a relationship, if at all. So it would make sense if his farewell was not focused on.

I loved Icheb. I think he's cute in a really twistedly nerdy way (even though, yes, his clothes are horrible...and he has a double-chin thing going on). I think his character was hinted to have more depth and complexity than explored -which is perfectly fine for any supporting character. This is especially evident in Child's Play and the episode where he risks his life to save 7 of 9. And in Q2, where he finally is with someone his own age and has to fight peer pressure.

Icheb > Wesley

I heard the actor who plays Icheb is a bit of a tool. Didn't mind him much, but at times, I felt introducing the Borg kiddies was a lame attempt to transform Seven into a Borg mommy. (A kind of lame sitcom within a drama.) They already had a Borg trying to be human character, for crying out! -- RR

yea he was in the last ep. as far as not saying goodbye to neelix, i either wouldn't or would have hurried him along. he probably felt the same and thought his time would be best used doing other things.

Was he a result of bad storylines, or bad acting?

Both.

I absolutely can't stand Icheb. He's an inherently annoying actor & character IMO. Seeing and/or hearing him on screen is like nails on chalkboard. I voted for him as most annoying Trek munchkin on a Poll on the general Trek board with that question.

I saw the Borg Kids as an example of other innocent lives the Borg ruins. All of their behavior is way off for children, a little to stiff and calculated. They might never have a normal childhood due to it. I didn't see them as Borg tying to be human, I saw them as the after affects of child abuse. That's very sad.:(
