Iam Banks the culture-star trek crossover

Has anyone done an idea like this. Ian Banks was a utopian sci fi writer who died just recently.

Basically same Galaxy how do the federation and the Culture interact? With their differing opinions on interference, genetic engineering, AI rights and so on?

It wouldn't be too terribly exciting of a story, I'm afraid. The Culture is so far advanced in comparison to the Federation, that there wouldn't be much point in their interaction. The Federation is planet-based, while the citizens of the Culture inhabit GSV's and orbitals. The Federation is very anti-artificial intelligence, while the Culture is run by hyper-advanced AI Minds.

Aside from a brief diplomatic contact, I doubt there would be much interaction.

Perhaps for a short story, but I guess I just don't see any dramatic potential there.

"Wow, your ships are really big, and really fast... and really smart."

"Yep."

"Can we have some of your technology?"

"Nope."

"Uh... okay, bye."

"Buh-bye."

However, I do like to be proven wrong... so if somebody writes it, I'll certainly read it. :-)

The Culture may well interact with the Federation, but other than "formal" diplomacy. (Which is a pretty flexible term for them and typically involves sex and drugs) it would be covert influence. They'd likely consider the federation pretty stuffy and try to influence their policies on genetic engineering, but otherwise mildly approve.

Frankly I think in terms of the sort of interventionist action we see in the novels they'd pay more attention to other ST factions.

It would, perhaps, be entertaining to see the Culture's Special Circumstances and the Federation's Section 31 trying to out-scheme one another.
