I Write The Songs...

That make the whole...world sing...

Okay, I was just karaoking with my wife, and I just sang, gasp, I Write The Songs (I even made the last high note, thank you very much)

Enterprise had that song, Straigh from My heart. This post is not here to bash or support the idea of putting a pop song at the start of Enterprise. The producer side of my brain understands the logic, so I'll leave it at that...

But what about the other shows, or even Enterprise. If, in ten years, you were working at spike, or where ever, and they said "Look, the times are changing. We are going to show repeats of all the TREK shows, but we want pop song to replace each show's current theme song...which songs would you select to represent each show in the opening credits..

Yeah yeah, you grumps, I know you might thing its a terrible idea, I get that. But sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

ENT: SYMPHONY X--FRONTIERS! Seriously, somebody should do a video mix with the ENT opening credits and this song. Just listen. It's freaking PERFECT. Can you IMAGINE this?! A production team willing to use this would've made the show kick ten kinds of ass.

TOS: Metallica--Wherever I Roam (This song has an ATTITUDE...like Kirk did. So what if it's not nautical?)

TNG: Coldplay--Politik (This may seem like an odd choice...but understand I am not always comfortable with what TNG represents. The political/moral preaching in the lyrics fits, I think. This is kind of how I see Picard.)

DS9: Enigma--The Eyes of Truth, or Peter Gabriel--Signal to Noise Considering this is the show that finally ripped off the veneer created by TNG and at times, TOS, I think either of these songs kind of get the message across, as to what DS9 was like. (If I wanted to take a more biting tone, commentary-wise, I'd choose Fates Warning--Simple Human. But I wouldn't make that a serious proposal.)

(It's VERY hard not to want to use Juno Reactor--Immaculate Crucifixion, which is the theme for my own work, Star Trek: Sigils and Unions.)

VOY: I wasn't a big fan, and I have a hard time coming up with one for Voyager.

I didn't bother with Enterprise, because it already has a pop opening. But if the choice were left to me, I would use Sleeping Satellite by Tasmin Archer:

Chorus:
I blame you for the moonlit sky
and the dream that died
with the eagle's flight
I blame you for the moonlit nights
when I wonder why
are the seas still dry?
Don't blame this sleeping satellite

Did we fly to the moon too soon?
Did we squander the chance?
In the rush of the race
the reason we chase is lost in romance
and still we try
to justify the waste
for a taste of man's greatest adventure.

chorus

Have we lost what it takes to advance?
Have we peaked too soon?
If the world is so green
then why does it scream under a blue moon?
We wonder why
if the earth's sacrificed
for the price of its greatest treasure

chorus

And when we shoot for the stars
what a giant step
have we got what it takes
to carry the weight of this concept?
Or pass it by
like a shot in the dark
miss the mark with a sense of adventure

chorus

Don't blame this sleeping satellite

Don't blame this sleeping satellite

Edit: Also, disregard the fanmade video, but this is the song I was talking about for DS9.

TOS-Blinding Light Show/Moonchild by Triumph

DS9-I'd use the Vic Fontaine song from "What You Leave Behind"

Voyager-Across the Universe

And TNG-anything totally boring and bland, like a Perry Como tune, to fit with the atmosphere of the show...
