On the one hand: the more your topic involves a hot-button issue in American politics, the more likely it is to degenerate into a flame war.

On the other hand: there are certain posters who are widely hated by others (often with good reason); the more these posters get involved in the discussion, the more likely it is to degenerate into a flame war.

So long as your thread avoids these two pitfalls, it's possible to have a perfectly civil and interesting discussion.

I think the UK election thread in TNZ was the most civilized thread I have ever seen in TNZ I think most of the people posting in it where from the EU.
