I wonder if the TOS 1701 is in the new timeline.

But, under a different name and registration number.

Given that the New E wasn't commissioned until 25 years after the loss of the Kelvin, it would seem unlikely that Starfleet hadn't commissioned new ships in the interim.

In 2233, the Constitution class would have been in the concept and design stage and while SF would have had the telemetry and data from the Kelvin, it would not have been analyzed and interpreted fully for years to come.

SF would have to recognize the need for intermediate improvements in the fleet which they had on the drawing board.

So, it's possible that the Enterprise we knew is out there, but under a different registration and name.

I like to think so anyway.

Thoughts?

Personally I had no problem with accepting Ryan Church's design as the Enterprise. As much as I love the original NCC-1701, I don't see the problem in imagining that this is what it always looked like. :)

I think the resizing sucks.

Well, actually I feel that the resizing sucks. There's no thinking reason for going one direction or another there, except continuity with the past.

At least we all agree that it would've been foolish for Starfleet to not commission a new ship in the 25 years (NuTrek timeline) since the Narada attack.

As I understand it, the Constitution Class ships were delayed in their creation by the death of a major designer who was on the Kelvin. (This was supposedly said by the writers who apparently did up a "Bible" of sorts, like you'd have on a TV show.)

This would mean that the Enterprise, as we see her, IS the ship we knew. There's no way for it to come any closer, because one of the major contributors just wasn't there to take part in the creation/design.

Gastrof,

From what we know now, that fictive "biblical" point was made up by a poster at the "STARTREKMOVIE" forum.

It is not a "canonical" point.

Okay.

Then why DID the Enterprise get built so much later than it should have, and end up looking quite different? Why was Pike on Earth and not Captain of a ship?

Many of us suspect the destruction of the Kelvin had SOMETHING to do with it all, and I don't recall seeing anything that looked like the TOS ship at that space dock.

Of course, there were other ships elsewhere...

Still, I'd hate to think that "our" Enterprise is out there somewhere looking just as it always did, but with a different name and number. I'd prefer to think of it as being delayed and for some reason designed a little differently.

For me, it strains credulity for a military force to hold off for twenty five years (in the face of a newly discovered Romulan threat - The Narada) then to fast track incremental improvements in their capability while working full-speed on their Next Generation of improved Star Ships.

They'd have no reason to think that the Romulans would 25 years to strike again. They'd deploy their next achievable starships - the former Constitution class- as a force modifier, while engineering their newer ships.

If you look at the oft-used screen cap of the new Spacedock- they're certainly appears to be a former Constitution class ship in the upper right.
