I want to live like a Vulcan

Plus,the whole sex every seven years thing...

Sorry to lower the tone so early in the thread.:biggrin:

I don't think it's lowering the tone, sex is a fundamentally healthy human behaviour, as is expressing emotions in a mature way. Vulcans are a fictional species and whilst the aesthetics of Vulcan spirituality may be appealing the truth is they seem alien precisely because they are at odds with our reality.

Logic is the beginning of wisdom...
I don't remember which show made this quote, but it's an inversion of a famous proverb "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" which essentially means "A humble heart is the beginning of wisdom."

I like this quote "Logic can be used to justify anything. That's its power ...and its weakness"

Yeah. Real healthy. Until one gets an STD and the last I'd read, though one needn't be a college major in biochemistry since the basics were fathomed in the 1800s, increasingly difficult-to-treat or even untreatable strains of once curable ailments like gonorrhea and syphilis have formed. Never mind those one rock solid definitions for Herpes types 1 and 2 no longer apply as either variant can live in either "upper" or "lower" regions (and as up to 80% of the adult population has HSV type 1 and with no symptoms (which is said that, for some, to remain dormant for years but generally symptoms and first outbreak appear a couple weeks after risky contact took place and note the virus can transmit through sweat, a very viscous and pliant liquid), no matter how little a sex life one has) and many don't know they do, it's largely a matter of when one gets it at this point no matter what proclivities they adhere to), never mind HIV and how PREP is not 100% effective with more new cases popping up periodically... it's a bit more complex than just all that, especially as condoms are not 100% effective at prevention and anyone can say "4% is nothing", until they get it in which case "4" becomes "100". It's a bit more complex than that as well...

Largely agreed, but considering there are real life ailments that curtail emotional processing and/or output... such as certain manifestations of autism, antisocial (despite its name, it's more like nonsocial but who cares) or schizoaffective or other related disorders as those mentioned are said by some to be within an umbrella group of not dissimilar disorders, even though many autistics do not see and hear manifestations in the way schizophrenics do, but various symptoms that have nothing to do with seeing or hearing imaginary things can and do overlap... Regardless, people who don't have any of those want them and for those who have any of them, how many are aware of it/them and of them how many do not want it/them?

You're a light in the darkness.:eek::ack:

In 2019 sex is much healthier than it used to be. :)

The idea of controlling emotions so they can’t lead to destructive behaviors is a good idea.

The thing is, the Vulcan lifestyle does not derive from strict emotionlessness. Vulcans choosing to be peaceful rather than dominating the Galaxy is an emotional choice. Logic just allows them to achieve it.

Morality is applied emotion. You need empathy to understand why hurting someone to benefit yourself is bad. The goal shouldn’t be to eliminate emotion, just to stop them from letting you cause harm.

By which argument breathing is also unhealthy when you consider the number of people who die via chest infections or the flu.

Also, speaking as a mental health professional, neurotypical and affective disorders are in no way comparable with the way Vulcans are portrayed on screen.

Please manage not to be quite so silly.

I actually started writing a short story set in the Enterprise era, about a young man who wanted to embrace the Surakist philosophy, and signed on for a tour on a Vulcan exploration ship. I'm just not good enough to get past the setup, so I only got a few pages in before I got stuck.
