I want to get involved in some sort of team sport...

I'm having difficulty finding any kind of sport that someone of limited physical ability could get into. I figured it'd be great for exercise (better than archery at least). Right now I'm looking at field hockey and fencing, but I have a feeling the clubs for those sports here at my school aren't accepting new members at the moment... plus I dunno exactly how skilled I have to be to even be allowed to participate at all. I'm worried I'll show up, they'll take one look at me, and be like "Pfft, no way. Shape up and THEN we'll talk." I've also been looking at maybe joining some kind of martial arts (my cousins do tae kwon do) but when I submitted my info to the rec center... NO ONE contacted me.

Should I just show up to a practice for whatever sport and tell the group I'm interested, then see where that goes?

Does anyone have any other sports recommendations? Preferably something that would also be easy to find an amateur group for back home? I used to do youth softball and soccer but I'm way too old for that now (I'll be 21 in June) and can't find any websites for adult sports groups that don't require some kind of tryout. With the shape I'm in, I'd never make a team unless it was one of those "everyone gets to participate" things.

(BTW, also trying to find something with a low injury risk. So far, fencing seems to be safest.)

I'm not sure where you're from, but if there's a curling club in your area, I recommend that. It's the wrong time to sign up, unfortunately, as the season is just ending, but if you want a team sport that's very welcoming to newcomers and doesn't require too much physical fitness (though it definitely helps), then curling sounds like exactly the game for you.

I'm at the University of Missouri. I go home to Texas every summer. We don't have a curling club here at Mizzou :p

One thing I do on occaision is wiffleball, since my dorm has a "Wiffleball Wednesdays" thing going on... but they've closed off the quad to prepare for commencement so we have nowhere to play. And I'd like to do something a little more serious than wiffleball.

Your local parks and recreation should have plenty of team sports available for different age groups. And the coed ones tend to be a lot less competitive than all-guys leagues.

If you're still at the U, aren't there intramural teams you can sign up with?

Yes, there are, and I looked. Basketball and flag football may be a tad too intense for me (and I don't think flag football has a women's division or is co-ed.) I get nervous whenever I have to catch a solid ball with my bare hands ever since I broke my finger in intermediate school while catching a basketball. Plus, I think deadlines have passed for team sign-ups.

http://www.mizzourec.org/programs/club_sports/ has a list of club sports available here. Intermurals are limited to team sign-up only (like dorms and fraternities) instead of individual (and I know I'm not good enough for someone to pick me as a free agent.)

What part of Texas do you go home to?

Not Houston. :p

San Antonio (well, a small town northeast of it.)

Hmmm....I have no idea if there's any curling down in SA. People were driving down from College Station to play with the club in Houston. The Houston club could tell you if there's a club nearby. I know we have some in Austin.
