I want a montage!

F. King Daniel

The next film is supposed to take place some time into the 5-year mission and IDW's comic book series is retelling TOS stories (with minor changes) in the new timeline.

Does anyone else think that a montage of memorable TOS moments acted out with the new crew would be really cool? Maybe as part of the intro credits, to show that some time has passed since the last movie - and maybe with some scenes showing adventures we didn't see during TOS, too.

Yes. Montages are cool. They always worked for Rocky Balboa. They could work for Trek as well. I say, yes to the montage!

I second that. Especially since IDW seems to be jumping over most of the first season. Their first four issues of the ongoing series cover the second pilot and Galileo Seven and the upcoming two issues go into Operation: Anihilate!.

I like this idea!! Doubt it will happen, but it would be a cool way to show that some time has passed and that the crew has seasoned a bit...

The montage must end with a horde of Tribbles humorously falling on an annoyed Kirk.

It might be fun (also a fun way to canonize the comics and drive the fans crazy). But who knows how much time will elapse between the films?

Montages cast money I can indicate time has past without spending money aside from maybe a minute or two of an actor.

Captains Log Stardate 2261.23

I am know starting my x year in command of the Enterprise.

Boring I know but cheap(er).

I'm not sure it would cost much at all. A few lookalike extras playing TOS guests, all the sets done on green-screen since each would be seen for only a second or two, and a couple of memorable lines spoken....

A most excellent idea. However if the film picks up just a few months after the first - maybe under the end titles, the way TOS did? Assuming this one has a happy ending, it indicates there's more to come afterwards. Especially given how long it's likely to take them to make a third film! The 5-year mission would be over by then... so a condensed version of the history might work, in a space where the music takes over and most are already on their feet, filing out of the auditorium.

The only other montage I want, is past ships named Enterprise displayed on a wall, in the Briefing Room or Rec Deck (as in TMP). Sailing ship, Aircraft carrier, Space Shuttle, Ring ship, NX-01, JJ-prise ;)

I have also heard that it will pick up not long after the time frame of the last movie. I'm just wondering if they could be smart enough to film the third movie while filming the second, cutting costs and and the time it takes to put out the third movie.

:wtf:
I hope not. Movies that are filmed back to back are most of the time really bad, quality wise. Look at the Matrix sequels, BTTF3, POTC3 or to an extend ROTK.
Cast and crew (especially the crew) grow tired, pacing and cutting are worse than usual, writers tend to use that as an excuse to stretch a plot and save the 3rd act of the first part for the sequel (which then consist of nothing than that 3rd act is basically just one large action sequence without any depht).
No, thank you. One movie after the other is the way to go.

Not to piss in the punch bowl, but in my opinion, a montage is not a good idea.
-- First, this is a new start. Separate from TOS. There's no reason to believe this crew has had anything but a few of the same experiences, if any.
-- Second, how it would be done? Sure, reinact three to five seconds from a few episodes, but which ones and which parts of those episodes?
-- Third, exactly how would it account for the passage of time to any movie goer except to the most fanboyish or hard core TOS fans among us who know the TOS chronology? (These would be the people walking out of the movie talking more about the montage than the movie. "Was that Rand in one scene?" Or, "They showed two of the adventures out of order. 'The Naked Time' happened after 'The Corbomite Maneuver'. I couldn't believe such a sploppy mistake. Ruined the movie for me.")

Now within the movie, maybe a passing reference or two to an earlier adventure that was also experienced by Kirk Prime and Spock Prime would be kind of cool.

Why would the fans go nuts if the comics would be canonised?

Because there are some fans who only consider what is shown on a tv or movie screen to be canon, and their heads would explode if any of the "unofficial" comics, games, or novels were canonized. Kind of like in Scanners, except with more nerd rage.

Add some scenes that even suggest the comics might be now included? Madness!

Well, the movie's writers have said they are deliberately seeding IDW's "Star Trek Ongoing" with Easter eggs for the new film.

When the next film comes out, any of those bonus people/places/things/events that are actually in the movie will essentially canonize those tidbits from the comics.

So far, they've suggested a previous relationship between Drs McCoy and Dehner, added Yeoman Rand to the crew of the Galileo instead of Mears, and now they are further exploring Jimmy Kirk's relationship with Uncle Frank and George Kirk Jr.

Now within the movie, maybe a passing reference or two to an earlier adventure that was also experienced by Kirk Prime and Spock Prime would be kind of cool.

In recent TOS/"Legion of Superheroes" crossover comic mini-series, Uhura Prime tosses out a mention of her Orion roommate at the Academy.
