I think this is awful

I would take the cat.

I would then auction it, at a starting price of half a million dollars. Accompanied by media folderol and blather, drum it up drum it good etc..

FOR THE CHILDREN. THIS CAT BECAUSE LIFE IS MORE PRECIOUS THAN MONEY BUT GIVE US THE MONEY TOO AND YOU GET THE CAT.

Pitched at corporations, also I would write super rich people like Oprah a personal letter about how it pained me to give up my cat, but I had already made a choice that the cat would live and now with her help the cat would live and so would the children. It would be a glorious mess of feel goodness.

I'd never auction my cat off (if I had one). Pets are family members!

There are other (and very effective) ways to raise money for charity. This year for example I'll join a relay team for a marathon. The run is a fundraiser for the local children's leukemia aid. Last year they raised more than 180,000 Euros (about 1/4 Million $). Everyone can participate and either run or walk as time doesn't count, only distance. Last year they had even 2 teams with perambulators: moms agains dads (the moms won as the dads didn't quite make it past the beer stall... :D)

Exactly. This poll came from the largest insurer in Queensland so you have to take into account what they would be after. I'm sure if a similar poll/survey was done by the RSPCA (the animal welfare organisation), that pets would probably come first.

I'm trying to work out how an insurance company can twist this to their advantage.

The insurance company I work for would focus on the opposite. You're welcome to take your pets and leave everything else to burn. We're here to take car of you etc. etc.

I have lots of useless stuff that can be replaced with an identical item - but if I don't take it with me out of the fire I won't remember it and therfore won't be able to replace it.

So best to risk my life for the crap.

My wedding band is only thing I'd grab and maybe whatever Watch I have on rotation and next to the bed.

Anyone else thinking of that old Simpsons episode 'Homer At The Bat'? Where José Canseco is stuck rescuing nearly everything from a lady's burning house.

"My grand piano!"
"Oh man"

One of my top 5 Simpson's episodes of all time! :)
