I think this is awful

Wallets and purses are more likely to be saved from a house fire than pets, at least in Queensland.
Queenslanders fleeing their burning homes are more likely to take their wallets and leave their pets.
Wallets, purses and handbags topped the list of items householders would save first, beating pets, a driver's licence, cash, passport and even photographs.

I know that I would save of my pets before any possession. I thought everybody would. Pets are family members.

Opinions, please.

Edited to add - I might forget to save the two goldfish in my son's room but i would feel guilty afterwards if I did.

Wouldn't cash, drivers licenses, photos ..etc be in the wallets and handbags that are being carried out?

^ Cash may not be easily replaceable, but driver's licenses and credit cards surely are.

Pets, OTOH, are unique. They're alive. They should come first.

I'd like to think I'd go to rescue my pets (if I had any) before I started making a play for wallets...

i keep some cash outside of my handbag and i assume by photos they mean those kept in albums. I wouldn't save the photo albums as all my important photos are on Flickr and in Dropbox as well as in my albums.

Pets first, no doubt. If I leave the house shortly after having had a hot meal I always worry i've fogotten to turn something off. First I get afraid that people could die, then pets and then I think of the house etc. In my head I always save the dogs, budgies and cat. I can't stand imagining how terrible it would be for the caged little ones being left in a fire...

My exit strategy includes my wallet so I'm not completely screwed if my house burned down but my other arm is for the pug. She's up there in age but I couldn't leave her to burn.

I used to live in a 26 floor condo. There were 2 legitimate fire alarms while we lived there. Both times I grabbed the cat and put him in his carrier while Hubby grabbed our ID and insurance papers (In a file folder right beside the door), then the 3 of us were out the door.

I really can't imagine leaving a pet behind :(

me neither. In Bavaria we have a saying: "First the livestock, then the people" (you can tell this is an agricultural country).
I took a week off when my late hamster was ill and everyone at my office considered that perfectly normal and asked about the little chap's health when I returned.

This is completely meaningless unless we know what question was asked. Was it even established whether people had pets? Or were they just asked to name the top few things they would take? In which case you'd expect a wallet or purse to come out top, because everybody has a wallet or purse, and not everybody has a pet.

Same goes for glasses. Only 1 in 5 people would take their glasses? Well, only half of people even need glasses, and even fewer need to wear them all the time to the extent they'd think to get them before escaping a fire.

First things I grab are my phone and my wallet, which I keep nearby anyways. Those are essential. There's nothing worse than the bureaucratic shitstorm that hits you when you lose ALL means of identification.

So when asked in a poll, I would be one of those basterds who "rescue wallet before pets". And also one of those idiots who would "rescue wallet before driver's licence, cash and passport". Those are in my wallet.

So basically, that poll is shit.

Isn't Bavaria in Germany? Never seemed that agricultural to me. Which part of Bavaria are you from?

I tried to find out the survey online to see what questions were asked but couldn't find any details. I find it hard to believe that many pet owners wouldn't rescue their pets first.

Yes to the first. Born and raised in Upper Palatinate, living in Lower Bavaria for 21 years now.
UP is extremely poor. Hardly any industry, about 2/3 forrest, the rest is stony. Only potatos and sheep grow there. Unemployment rate among the highest in Germany. A little tourism, particularly hikers and skiers.
LB is rather the opposite: the south is the best farmland in Europe. Very intensive farming, not much industry apart from gherkin and juice factories. The north is like UP - mostly forrest and dairy-farming. Not much tourism, mainly hiking and river cruises.

As I type this my diamond dove is perched on the back of my chair and my blue budgie is flying over head occasionally perching on the arm of my chair. My list would be - Children, birds, and then my purse (it has important ID and insurance info in it.)

Just a note about birds - Birds have very efficient respiratory systems which also means their respiratory systems are very delicate. Birds will succumb to smoke inhalation very quickly.

Warmest Wishes,
Whoa Nellie

I'd probably grab my purse, then go for the guinea pigs. I have a carrier I could put them in. I'd just have to leave my poor gerbils. They can't be caught easily. Of course, depending where the fire was located, I might just be able to get myself out.

My order of importance, although hopefully my kids and wife can get themselves out of the house, which would then move my dog to the top of the list.

1. Kids
2. Wife
3. Dog
4. Personal computer
5. Wallet
6. Work computer

in my case it'd be (or rather it was - I had that dubious pleasure some 20 years ago when we had a house fire in the neighbourhood and it was uncertain if our house would burn down as well; fortunately, it didn't, we only lost the shed and a car) :

1 pet
2 guitar
3 inherited jewelry
4 wallet
