I think they should reboot Spider-Man

Norrin Radd

Vice Admiral
Raimi speaks about the fourth one, due in 2011, but I say wait a few more years and try it again.

If there's any superhero franchise that can sell itself, it's Spider-Man.

It doesn't need Raimi, Maguire, or Dunst. And after the trainwreck of Spider-Man 3, I'm not convinced that Raimi truly cares anymore.

Sign Topher Grace as Peter, make him joke every once in a while, and get Christopher Daniel Barnes to dub his voice in.

I'm not sure they have to reboot the series, but there's an argument to be made for it. It will have been four years since the last movie by the time this one is made. By then, Tobey will be about 36 (he was born in 1975), roughly twice the age Peter should be. Kirsten will be 29. Both are admittedly young looking but even in Spider-man 3, I thought Tobey was getting a bit jowly on it.

It doesn't need to be a Batman Begins/ Casino Royale reboot though. They can keep the movie in the existing continuity but bring in younger actors to play the leads, like they did with the previous Bond movies (ignoring the fact that Roger Moore is older than Connery) or like they at one stage intended to do with the Harry Potter series.

Can't see anyone making a better JJJ than JK Simmons, though. Maybe if they reboot, they'll keep him on, a la Judi Dench.

Well, of course they should reboot it. It's not like they've been making scads of money and entertaining huge audiences doing things the way they've been doing them.

There would be no need to reboot even if it was a whole new cast. It's not like the movie franchise has been dormant for twenty years like the Superman movie franchise was.

I think a lot of films should reboot with younger actors at a certain point to keep the series going. With Spiderman I can see new people in the roles very easily, except for JK. He is JJJ.

Reboot doesn't necessarily mean new origin story. It means new cast, new director, new direction...
Toby McGuire is still young enough to play Peter Parker. The only problem with SM3 was the lack of direction, emo-Parker, too many villains, and a crappy script.

Mr. Radd, y'had me thinking again about:

What if they made Spider-Man in the mid or late '80's?

Zach Galligan would've been great casting as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Frances Sternhagen as Peter's Auntie Mame. To play Mary Jane? Jadzia Dax? Jeannie Bueller? Gotta be better mid-late 80's MJ casting choices yes? Count Bakula as the Green Goblin. Robert Duvall as Doc Oc.
Back to main/real topic:

If reboot the Webhead, probably easier to just hire competent quality newbies all round:vulcan:

If 3's as fecal as aficionados say, then TPTB should remove it from Spidey movie canonuity:)

That's all.

Make a real 3rd Webhead film:hugegrin:

A recast is needed for the leads. Neil Patrick Harris is a great Spidey (he did the voice on the MTV animated series) and just get rid of MJ (Dunst) and have a Gwen Stacy storyline instead.

Another thing is I don't see why they should pay outrageous salaries to cast and crew who I (and I suspect many others) just don't see as being essential to the franchise.

Honestly...

Does Maguire=Bale?

I don't think so.

Does Raimi=Nolan?

I don't think so.

Is the plan still to make parts four and five back-to-back? If so, this is a bit premature, don't you think?

Define "outrageous" salary. The original movie made a boatload of money, so it's natural for the cast to want a raise for subsequent sequels. Box office history proves they are worth it.

Ironman is a terrific example. If Robert Downy Jr is paid the GDP of small Latin American country then by all means do it. He's worth it.

A 'soft reboot' would probably be a better idea. Meaning, no new origin story, just wait a while, recast everybody and start from a point where Peter/Spidey is already established.

Give it a rest, Spidey movies make big bank. Sony/Marvel aren't going to change shit until it doesn't. Until then, Toby & Raimi are still greenlit for Spidey 4 & 5.

Overreaction. Just because Spider-man 3 sucked you want to reboot the whole thing? Give them a chance to screw up Spider-man 4 first. :p

I blame Todd Macfarlane. Venom was always a sucky, derivative character that sucks the creative juices out of anything it touches as it did in SM3. And it was Macfarlane that first drew Venom. So it is his fault.

And he continues to throw a monkey wrench in the rights for Miracle/Marvelman too. See? That just proves how much of a bane to our existence he is. May he writhe in agonizing symbiote tentacle bondage and torture. (I subbed "bondage and torture" for the "rape" part there in deference to the feelings of people who say one shouldn't joke about such things)

I absolutely loved Spiderman 3 and I think Maguire is the best ever choice for Peter Parker. I do not wish to see a Spiderman reboot, it is not required.

Considering the only other choice for a live-action version of Peter Parker was Nicholas Hammond, yes, you are right. But only so far. Tobey Maguire's acting is far from an ideal portrayal of Peter. And his Spider-Man, well... I am used to a Spidey with a far more witty repartee.

The series doesn't need a reboot, it needs a recast. Except for JJJ and Betty Brant. May as well keep the same Curt Conners too. They can be this franchise's M, Moneypenny and Q.

I think they should just stop, hardly any franchises at all have successfully pulled off more than 3 movies without ending up sucking terribly.

They should quit while they are still just about ahead, creatively speaking.
