I think I'm about make a life changing decision.

I'm thinking about when my future kids go off to college, I'll tell them to take a couple of education courses even if they don't want to major in education, in case they one day teach courses related to their professions later on. Many of my science profs confided in me that they wished they had better training in how to teach.

Naw, the best training is how to attract research funding - then you have ATs do all your teaching while you write papers and go to conferences that you have selected because they are in countries where you want to visit.

That's why you want to bring in that sweet sweet money and make sure you get into an University which has a chance of attracting it and where nobody asks where you have been for the last three weeks (a holid.. research trip) then get ATs and PhD students to do all the grunt work.

Oh, I know. I had friends who majored in English and History, and I usually looked at them with cock-eyed expression, thinking, "What the hell are you going to do with that degree?"

Then it turned out that business and accounting degrees were just as worthless, so I guess the joke's on me.

Computer Science is still a fairly dependable major. Although, I do recommend branching out a bit in the class selection to broaden one's horizons. I really liked my History of Modern Warfare class, for instance.

Well I seem to always get in on these posts after there are pages and pages of replies already, but I second a lot of the advice here to go with your instinct. It sounds like you have a good relationships with your folks and you're ready to take on your education and open up to new opportunities.
