I think I'm about make a life changing decision.

What kind of a lease are you guys under? Are you leaving before the lease expires? I get that you want to leave, but you also don't want to be a douche and screw your roommate over.

I just took a step back and looked at my life, and realized I was not happy with where I was. Not only with my level of employment, but of where I lived and who i surrounded myself with. Had I stayed on this path nothing good would have come from it.

That was me back in '98 when I was a waiter at East Side Mario's.

I'm sitting here and I just thank god that I have such supportive parents that I do. Without them I really would be stuck right now and I'm just so glad they are allowing me this opportunity.

Same here. My Mom and Stepdad didn't even blink when I asked to move back in.

But none of it will mean anything unless I give it my all when I go back to school. That's what's kind of scaring me, I know I'm going to have to take this chance and really apply myself at school. I used to be the kind of person who did the bare minimum at school and managed to get by. I can't do that anymore.

I was the same way in highschool but much to my surprise I really enjoyed being back in school and had no problem applying myself. I think you may discover that now that you're older and actually want to be back in school you'll find it much easier to apply yourself too.

Well, since your roommate didn't previously disclose his pot habits to you, why should you be obligated to hang around him longer?

So anyways, since this thread is now just starting to turn into people offering up their support on how they think this is a good plan for me (which I thank you all for your kind words). I thought I'd put it to good use:

I'm kind of worried about how I'm going to tell my roommate. Just four months ago I moved in with him because I needed a place to live and he needed a roommate (all of his paycheck was going towards his bills*). I feel that by moving out I'll be putting him back into the same situation he was in before I moved in.

*I found out later (after moving in) that about a third of his paycheck was going towards cigarrettes and pot.

Run. Get out while you can. If you aren't under any lease agreement, and his pot habit is putting strain on you, whether personally or financially, whether he's your friend or not is irrelevant. You don't have any obligation to him and certainly if he hasn't done anything to better equate the living situation (i.e. not dropping cash on more bud so he can pay his half of the bills) then you should feel no compunction about bolting.

Well, since your roommate didn't previously disclose his pot habits to you, why should you be obligated to hang around him longer?

This.

Yeah, at a time like this you have to be selfish and think of yourself. I had to tell my best friend I was moving him out and he only had two months notice to either find a new roommate or get a new apartment. It sucked for him but I had to take care of me first.

Well I have a goal in mind. January 15th is the date I am aiming at to move back. I know all of you are telling me I should be moving sooner, but four months seems like a good amount to me. I still have friends over there I like, that I will want to visit with. And while I know it's not a good job, I still enjoy what I do, and I feel it would be a nice thing on my part to finish out season with them.

However, I'm aiming to get started in school in January, so if it turns out the January quarter starts earlier than the fifteenth, I'm out of there in time to get moved in over here.

And to anyone still questioning whether I'm on a lease or not. No, I never signed a lease, which was probably dumb on my roommates part, but he never thinks things through (on account of being high all the time).

If you're planning on starting your classes in January, you better start looking in to applying to schools now. It'll take a few weeks for transcripts, test scores, etc. to be mailed either to you or directly to the unviersity/school of choice, never mind processing time.

Just because you pay the fee and turn in the paperwork doesn't mean admissions counselors just go ahead and stamp "ADMIT" or "DENY" on it right then and there. There are a host of other factors that enter the process at that point that can extend or shorten the process, so why take the chance?

Do you really want to go to all the trouble of moving back only to find out hey, you got admitted, but because classes are full you have to wait till next semester? Then what will you do?

As an admissions representative for a college, I agree with everything he just said. Get your stuff done ASAP.

Which doesn't even take in to account program and departmental bullshit stuff like only being able to start certain programs in either fall or spring but not the summer. Those situations were always fun when someone got in who looked great on paper, but because they applied late, wound up having to wait six months to a year to start the program of their choice.

--doubleoh, worked in university admissions for six years. :techman:

Do some research on what you want to do. I would argue against law school.

I'm not intending full-time work, but many of my classmates cannot find jobs paying enough to live on AND pay their loans. And much online about new lawyers searching for ANY legal job, lining up for $80-a-DAY jobs! These are people owing $120k or more in student loans.

I remember when we got a tree taken down, the guys said that they were making around $80K/year. Trades like that cannot be outsourced overseas.

Well, the beauty of student loans is that you can often put them into forebearance or deferrment if you can't afford to pay them.

All this is already on my mind. Which is why I am going to get on this ASAP. Well, as soon as I get back home. I still consider this somewhat of a vacation :p

It's your business when you choose to do things obviously, but if you wait until January to apply to a school, there is a very low likelihood of being able to start classes that semester. The deadline to be admitted for spring is usually around October 1st, and those things like transcripts and test scores will take a long time to get. If you apply in January, you probably won't be able to start classes until a year from now, next fall. If you're fine with that it's cool, no need to worry right now, but if you want to start classes sooner, you will need to have all of this stuff done before you even move back home.

I think your plan is a great one and shows a lot of maturity (not letting your ego get in the way of your decision regarding moving back home). Your parents sound nice, so it's not as if moving back home will be a nightmare.

Yeah, I tried looking for paralegal work post-undergraduate degree and found out pretty soon that the firms were firing people in droves rather than hiring. I shifted from looking at law school applications and noticed that one of the accounting school deadlines actually fit my situation much better. I ended up at a top accounting school and was able to start my studies much sooner than the law school applications would have allowed.

Have you considered service in the armed forces? Decent pay, help with tuition, and no parents. ;)

^it would take him a longer while to become a teacher. He'd have to serve for a while before going to college.

^ Not in most jobs.

Oh, is that what he wants? Only read/skimmed the first two or three pages. Sorry. ;)

On active duty, probably, yeah, plus four in reserve duty - all initial military contracts are for eight years. Still doesn't make it a bad deal, necessarily, as not all teaching fields offer solid employment prospects these days. What subject would you like to teach, Aldo?
