I swear that's an NX class they're flying in the new trailer!

It looks EXACTLY like an NX class... Look at 2:13 on the video. Maybe that is the USS Franklin and it's a different class type but I think it's NX.

The layout is similar but it's no more an NX than the Ambassador is a Constitution.

Have you checked out the public preview picture of the USS Franklin?

Nope, not "exactly", it's missing the warp field governer model between the nacelles.

In the trailer it does resemble the NX from behind ...

But from the concept art we've seen, it's a much smaller ship.

Based on the very quick shots of it we see in the trailer, I had assumed it was NX just with better surface detailing because it's on the big screen.

You know, it's weird. I've never cared for the NX design, but I am kind of excited to see it (or at least something based on it) on the big screen. In a way, all five Trek shows will now have been represented on the big screen. TOS and TNG of course had their own movies, DS9 was represented with the Defiant appearing in First Contact, First Contact also featured an EMH and Janeway was in Nemesis, thus securing Voyager's representation.

Well, I meant a visual representation, but you're right about the NX model in STID. Plus, the NX-Alpha from First Flight, which definitely wins obscurity points.

And you can also see the wedge shape in the aft section.

Looks a lot smaller than a NX.

Corvette/cutter analogue IMO. Though, with the typical trope that smaller = faster when in space.

It is smaller then the NX, but not that much. The Franklin has 6 decks, while the NX has 7. I've seen the number 6 on a turboleft on the Franklin bridge in a picture I've seen over at Trekcore.

Mmh, I think they dropped the concept art ship and decided to go with a refitted NX model to establish some continuity. We know the NX series is canon thanks to Into Darkness, and if the planet is supposed to have crashed ships over a long period of time then it would be a cool tie-in to find an old NX series for the crew to use.
