I saw something horrible and can't unsee it!

So yesterday, Hubby and I were out running errands and saw two small birds walking across the street--one lane each way. As we approached, we saw that there were quite a number a smaller objects--the parent birds were escorting their young across the street.

Oh, how cute, right?

Then we realized than traffic coming the other way wasn't slowing. In fact, the first car (the only one which could see this) actually sped up. Hubby said the guy aimed for them, that the parents flew but the babies were too small. No idea what happened, but there were three more cars whose drivers would've been totally ignorant of the situation.

Just a horrid thing to happen. Hubby wasn't sure if ANY of the chicks made it. I didn't actually turn around. I was getting sick to my stomach about it, but what I DID see and what I was told, I wish I could unsee, you know?

Aw :(

So you didn't jump out into the street and force him to slow down because - ?

Because she didn't want to end up like the guy who rushed out on to a highway near Chicago O'hare 8 days ago. Long story short, he was killed in front of his fiancee along with the ducks he was trying to save.

Link to news brief.

Yeah, I'm 99% sure you were kidding, but this story could have ended a lot worse. Personally, I doubt the first driver noticed the ducks. There's sick bastards out there, but most prefer not hosing their car off after hitting something.

No, we didn't stop and jump out. It was more "Ooh! How cute....oh my god, he's not slowing down!" By the time the oncoming car would be hitting them, we were already past them by multiple car lengths.

It wouldn't have been difficult for the oncoming car to slow and stop. He had been accelerating well ahead of the cars behind him--and Hubby said it appeared that he accelerated and swerved to hit them.

If he hit them intentionally then he's an asshole. If he didn't see them, then he probably feels horrible about it. I hit a cat like 10 years ago and it still bothers me.

A bird flew right into my windshield two weeks ago while I was driving on the highway. On the plus side, it probably died instantly from the 80mph impact. On the negative side, it had a friend. :(

I'm a locomotive engineer now, but several years ago when I had less seniority, I was working as a brakeman in a switching yard next to the main line. It was dusk and I was making my way from one switching area to the next place we were going to work; two young dogs were chasing each other around the tracks and a 50 MPH train clipped one of them, catapulting her into the underbrush. After the train passed, I went over to that side of the tracks and found the uninjured dog sniffing at the clearly dead one (I won't go into graphic details). The survivor looked at me, then back at his ladyfriend, then back at me again. There was no collar on either dog that I could have gotten information from to tell the owners what had happened.

Since promotion to locomotive engineer, my tally over nine years is innumerable possums/raccoons/deer, one flock of ducklings that couldn't hop over the rails in time to catch up to the mother (very sad business), one owl (THAT was spooky), several members of a flock of wild turkeys, one SUV and one semi-trailer (no injuries), and the piece de resistance, two cows simultaneously (That. Was. Awesome!). Thank God, no humans.

My girlfriend is extremely sensitive to anything sad or painful involving animals and I sometimes have to protect her from seeing such things. I completely understand how upsetting that could be to you propita. I am sorry you had to witness it.:(

:( Oh, the poor ones. Can feel with you. Once saw my neighbours dog getting run over by a car (but the vet managed to save her life) and the memory, though 3 or so years ago, still makes me pale.

It wouldn't surprise me if they did speed up to kill the birds. There are definitely people like that out there. What a shame. Poor birds. :(

I'm sorry propita :( But it really could've been worse.
About 5 years ago when my sis-in-law was pregnant with my niece. she saw a 2 year old boy crossing a major street in one of those big wheels bikes, very low to the ground. A woman hit him and he died instantly. She was sitting on the ground cradling him and crying. This was at around 8:00 pm. Evidently, he routinely went down to meet his mom at the bus stop. He had an older sister and a grandmother at home, I don't even think they realized he was not at home.
My sis-in-law was too upset to drive home.

I was in a car that ran somebody over once, although I wasn't driving. That was seriously unpleasant. He wasn't killed, but he broke his leg very badly and was really messed up. I'm not squeamish when it comes to blood and the like, but I don't have a very high tolerance for observing suffering.

Ditto...though more recently. We pulled over and stopped and went to look for it, but it was too dark. Part of me likes to think it just bounced off and ran away. But the truth is probably more morbid...

Makes me sick what some people do. I believe cruelty to animals should earn the perpetrator a very special place in hell.
