Why is everybody so down on Voyager :confused::confused:

This has been discussed before at length, so I'll just give a quick summary.

Voyager did not live up to its premise. A ship lost 70 years from home, surrounded by hostile races, two crews with different agendas forced to work together... by episode 5 it had become TNG in the Delta Quadrant. It could have been a profound exploration of humanity and survival (like nuBSG has tried to do) but instead they went back to the old alien of the week formula that had already been done for ten years by TOS and TNG.

This is in stark contrast with DS9 which had a dull sounding premise about a space station not going anywhere, but it managed to become a show about humanity and survival. Complex character relations formed involving a large recurring cast, and there was some truly great plot twists on the way. The dialogue could be superb, particularly anything said by Garak.

Watching DS9 and Voyager at the same time allowed me to see just how lazy the writing on Voyager was. It was formulaic, non-serialised and heavy with technobable.

Voyager had a fantastic premise and it became an average television show. It should have been so much more than that.

A lot of people have a tendency to "romanticize" TOS. Not that it's not a good show because it is but for someone who is used to the production values of TNG and DS9 it might be a let down unless they can keep it in context of the 1960s. I grew up watching TOS and I love the show but from what little info the OP has given I think Voyager might be a better place to move on to at this point in their viewing experience. Unless from the two seasons he says he has seen he knows he isn't that interested then by all means move to ENT or TOS and save VOY for last.

I certainly and firmly disagree with many who dis VOY. I own every series on DVD and although VOY is not at the top of my list it's not at the bottom either.

My vote goes for Voyager because it`s my second fav show.
Not all episodes are good ones but there are really many good episodes - and- it has a wonderful cast.

Here's a related question: which should I buy, Voyager, Enterprise, or Battlestar Galactica? I've never been interested in TOS (heresy, I know), and, like the original poster, I own both DS9 and TNG.

I've seen the entire run of Voyager, the first two seasons of Enterprise (and "These Are the Voyages"), and nothing of Battlestar Galactica; however, one of my friends tells me it's very good. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind re-watching Voyager to see if my initial "meh" impressions are still valid, and I also wouldn't mind seeing "Through a Mirror, Darkly," for Enterprise.

Interesting premise for a question.

It depends on what you liked about Star Trek. If you were underwhelmed by Voyager then BSG may be the antidote, Ron Moore has said that BSG is how he would have done Voyager if given the chance.

BSG has no aliens and no space anomalies, all it has is Humans fleeing from Cylons with religion and mythology mixed in. The characters are all flawed and inter-personnel conflict is common. There are some great characters, my personal favourite is Gaius Baltar because he is a self-serving narcissist and he doesn't care. :techman: The story doesn't seem to have been plotted out in advance, so it does meander quite a bit (particularly season three), but there are some excellent plot twists and some gripping drama.

For my personal tastes, it is better than Voyager and Enterprise, and even TOS and TNG. It might even be better than DS9, but DS9 will alway be my favourite of the two. Plus, if you get into it now you might be able to watch the final episodes with the rest of us.

However, if you like aliens and and optimistic vision of the future, BSG probably isn't for you. In that case I would try Enterprise because that show was pretty good in its final two seasons (TATV excluded).

TOS is where I would go, it's the beginning. There were so many good stories and so much courage and hope for the future. On the other hand, there were plenty of bad episodes and continuity errors, but I think that's become as important a part of the charm of the show as all the great stuff.
I just smile whenever things like set pieces magically move around during shots, stunt doubles that look absolutely nothing like the actors, Shatner's overly dramatic reading of the constitution, or the space hippies... dear lord, the space hippies...

I went TNG - DS9 - Voy, largely because of the nostalgia I have for these series. These were the Trek that I personally grew up with.

I'd love to get TOS, but I'm holding out for a Blu-Ray release.

Ent I will pick up sooner or later, probably later. It's still pretty fresh in my mind, having just aired a few years ago.

If these were the only choices (I'm a DS9 man at heart!) then I'd go for Voyager. From Season 4 onwards it get's really good IMHO.

TOS, then Enterprise. They both have vastly superior storytelling and writing compared to Voyager. Plus, you can probably get both of them for very little more, if not the same price as Voyager.

Plus, Voyager had so many bad episodes that you could get the same effect and 3/4 of the good episodes by buying the Fan Collective sets. Instead of Voyager, buy the animated series and download some of the fan series like Hidden Frontier and Odyssey. :/
