DSL has been great! I never knew what I was missing on dial-up. I can watch videos and it everthing moves fast. Do you recall the moment when you first moved away from dial-up?

Yes. I went from a 28.8k modem to Road Runner, when Road Runner was first entering the market. I got speeds in excess of 900 KB per second (before the advent of throttling). It was incredible. I'm now with Cincinnati Bell and get reasonably good speeds for a great price, so I'm happy, but I miss those early days of free roaming and high bandwidth.

I'm in New Zealand. We're still waiting.

Well, we do have broadband. It just works as dial-up speed, apparently. Especially wireless.

That sucks, mate. Lemme tell you getting away from dial up is like getting out of prison. Only even better. Now, I've never been in prison but I can't imagine how getting out would be better than getting a faster server.

Congrats. Welcome to a decade ago. Your porn options are now limitless.

I was a relative latecomer to the Internet (2003, I think) and started out with dial-up which obviously frustrated me beyond belief with the slowossity. I remember doing an online "broadband availability" check not long after that - I live in a small town, so I wasn't too hopeful. But it came back with a big fat YES! I nearly exploded with delight.

:D

Ahh, yes, that damn throttling on Road Runner. Now I only download at a sustained 1800KB/s. Curse them!

Incredibly my internet download/upload speeds are now better here in Romania than they were in Canada when I left 3 years ago. I get up to 20 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up.

I am especially fond of the 2 Mbps upload speed. It makes uploading all my pictures to Flickr so much faster.

My first experience with high speed was when I started college in 1998. For some strange reason, my Dad, who did a lot of techie stuff for work from his computer at home, didn't upgrade to high speed until 2003.

I've been on my own since 2005 and have had high speed ever since. It's not at all expensive anymore. I get digital TV + high speed internet for $70/month.

A friend of mine could get broadband in '98 so I already knew what I was missing, but I couldn't get it myself until 2000. It was a 768/128 kbit/s DSL line. Now that was fast!

My current DSL line is over 65 times faster than that, but it doesn't really feel like the same jump in speed as going from 56K to DSL back then.

The switch from dial up to high speed didn't seem that overwhelmingly great at first. It was when I was forced to use dial up again that I truly discovered how great high speed is. I have no idea how I ever tolerated anything else.

We'd had dsl at home for a few years, then moved in 2005. We had to wait five months for dsl to arrive where we're living now.

went to the net on dail up in 99 then a year later moved onto broadband internet and was surprised how fast it was

Shamefully, I still haven't upgraded to broadband at home... I just take what internettage I can while I'm at work.

I did try the old 56k a couple of weeks ago though. After the eighth or ninth hour of waiting for Yahoo's homepage, I decided I was much happier being bored :p Damn 21st century.

I forget that there are people out there still on dial up:guffaw:
Yes My old pc could not handle it and had to be replaced:klingon:

And a million pop up ads came out of no where but when i was up and running properly i was amazed at the D/L speed.
