I need a hobby!

I've just realized that I need a hobby that I can do indoors, as it frickin poured rain all weekend and most of my current hobbies are outdoorsy. I read a fair bit and have a new video game, so I managed to pass the time, but I got a little bored. I'd also be happy to receive suggestions for outdoor hobbies, which I will consider in the unlikely event that I ever see the sun again.

One caveat: I am broke (well, I make good money, but I'm directing every extra penny to the destruction of my student loans) so keep it cheap.

Here are a few of my current hobbies/interests for background purposes:

Hiking, irresponsible cycling, walking my awful dog, history, alternative history, classical literature, science fiction, geocaching, camping (drunken) and... I swear there must be more than that...

Tell me what to do with my time!

Don't laugh, but I suggest crocheting. I've never met someone who didn't enjoy crocheting once they learned how, men included. It is cheap and you can make lots of useful stuff with it. I usually crochet while half watching some TV show or movie. It just feels very rewarding to work with your hands to create something practical.

Reading is my main indoor hobby, but you said you already do a fair but of that.

How about needlepoint?

Seriously.

Model building? If you have mechanical aptitude, there are various hobbies like watch/clock repair, knife making, etc.

I haven't built a model in years, maybe I should give that a try. Sadly, I have absolutely no aptitude for music, not for lack of trying.

Needlepoint is making pictures out of thread, right? What exactly is crocheting? Like knitting?

Puzzle, I`m doing one now, it is stress relieving and time consuming. I thought I would hate it but I`m loving it....

Torrent some good language software and start learning a foreign language. Do yoga and flexibility/core training. Grow plants. Troll a forum. Download more porn.

Heh, you beat me to it as I was going to suggest knitting. :) Like crochet, when you're first learning you can buy cheap needles and yarn as your first few pieces will probably be kinda crappy. As you improve you'll want to invest in better yarn. There's nothing more comfy than handknit socks, and I feel clever every time I turn a heel. :bolian:

Crocheting and knitting are similar, but some people find one easier than the other. I think that crochet is generally easier...you use one hook and some yarn and make different kinds of stitches to create a variety of clothy items. :)

I've done both when i was younger...
Same with spool knitting...
Last time i did any of them i was 12 or something...

I looked up hobbyist in a search engine and apparently people who frequent prostitutes call themselves that. That's an indoor activity. :p

I'd say collecting, but that usually ends up being just a big waste of money (see: baseball cards). Sometimes video games you can play cooperatively with others can be more fun than just playing solo.

Are you creatively expressive? If you can paint or draw or write or something like that, maybe you can create something.

I agree crocheting is easier to start, but has the potential to be much more complicated and difficult than knitting when one gets into things like lace, flowers, etc.
Colonel Green, If you learn to crochet you could make one of these!

I picked up painting one boring dull day and I've been going about a year now. You can get some pretty cheap canvas boar, cheap acrylic and cheap brushes to start with.

Plus I've managed to sell off some of my pieces so it's been able to mostly pay for itself.
